Trinity is Ireland’s leading university and is ranked 87th in the world (QS World University Rankings 2025). Founded in 1592, the University is steeped in history with a reputation for excellence in education, research, and innovation, which has been inspiring generations of thinkers for over 400 years. In recent years, quantum computing has developed at an impressive pace, with implementations already claiming quantum supremacy. Such fast development drives the requirement to exchange quantum information between quantum computers and towards end users, to enable distributed quantum computing and ubiquitous access to centralized quantum resources. However, in order for quantum communications to be implemented a large scale, it will need to make use of the ubiquitous optical fibre network that is already in place for classical telecommunications network. This work will thus focus on the development of a framework to enable coexistence of classical and quantum channels over the same fibre network infrastructure. One Post Doctoral researcher position is available for work in the area of fibre-based quantum communications networks, including research on protocols and intelligent control planes for hybrid classical/quantum communications networks. The applicants should have a solid background and working experience in optical networking and experience in quantum communications.
