Position Summary
The Associate General Counsel is responsible for advising on client and/or third-party arrangements, supporting clients and internal stakeholders on a wide variety of contract and engagement related issues and advising on legal matters ranging from Commercial Contracts, Employment, Privacy, Corporate, and Tax. The Associate General Counsel works under the direction of the EMEA General Counsel and in close collaboration with other Associate General Counsels and Assistant General Counsels. This position will be located in Dublin or Amsterdam, but the successful candidate will provide advice on a regional level.
Ideal candidate:
We are looking for an individual who has 7-9 years’ experience as in-house counsel or is keen to make the move into an in-house legal role. The individual will have a solid grounding in commercial and privacy matters and specialized knowledge of employment legislation in the EU. This individual will also be enthusiastic in expanding their experience into other legal areas affecting today’s global firms such as corporate and compliance matters. This is a role working within a fast-paced, collaborative and supportive legal team.
The team is spread internationally and consists of Law Clerks, Assistant General Counsels, Associate General Counsels, Regional General Counsels and a Chief Legal Officer.
Relationships and scope
Reports Directly to: EMEA General Counsel
Key Working Relationships: Associate General Counsels and Assistant General Counsels
1. Advises on complex legal issues, firm policies, and issues involving potential legal, professional or reputational risks with an enterprise-wide mindset.
2. Operates independently, with excellent and nuanced judgement and ability to problem solve across multiple contexts and stakeholders, including senior leaders.
3. Helps to shape policies and develops approaches that can be deployed across the firm, advises senior leaders on complex issues and matters with potentially broad implications across the firm.
4. Reviews, negotiates and advises on complex contractual arrangements with clients, vendors and/or third-party arrangements.
5. Takes the lead on responses to current or pending legal matters, including potential disputes with clients.
6. Has established a strong outside counsel network and is able to instruct outside counsel effectively.
7. Develops expertise relevant to a core area and disseminates to rest of the Department; is known and sought out for deep expertise and guidance on core areas (e.g., employment, contracting, client disputes, private equity, intellectual property, privacy, corporate matters).
8. Drives substantial projects and initiatives for the Firm and for practices/regions, leveraging their own areas of expertise, demonstrating significant impact.
9. Provides oversight and guidance to less tenured/experienced colleagues, including Law Clerks, Contracts Specialists and Assistant General Counsels.
10. Provides training across the organization on legal matters and compliance.
Ideal Candidate:
11. 5 -8 years’ experience as an advocate/solicitor/barrister or in-house equivalent.
12. Qualified to practice law in EU.
13. If qualified on continental EU – Master’s degree in law
14. Exceptional writing and communication skills in English. Knowledge of other languages (German/Italian/French) is a bonus.
15. Good & detailed understanding of employment legislation.
16. Excellent communication and analytical skills.
17. Hybrid working environment with an expectation of at least 2-day attendance on location.
