R&D Chemist – Chemical Development & Processing
Plan, manage, and progress Chemical Research and Development Projects to meet objectives agreed with the IKON Chemical R&D Manager.
1. Join project teams, agreeing project work with Development Chemists and the IKON Chemical R&D Manager.
2. Facilitate work, including training, help and support to produce samples in the Chemical lab or Prototype area.
3. Assist the IKON Chemical R&D Manager when required to carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in line with your main duties.
Research and investigate available information from various sources to understand the project or task and identify possible solutions:
1. Internet search, for example academic journals.
2. Discussions with chemical suppliers.
3. Discussions with senior team members across the company.
Production and Analysis of Samples (Lab & Prototype)
1. Initial screening of possible formulations and chemicals in the laboratory.
2. Reactivity testing and adjustment to meet standard reactivity times.
3. Produce Box mould samples for testing.
4. Analysis of samples for Fire, Lambda and Mechanical performance.
5. Develop methods for the production and analytical testing of IKON development samples.
6. Production of new or improved formulations in panels or boards produced in IKON’s prototype production facility.
7. Work with the prototype technicians and the Senior R&D Chemical Process Engineer in the Prototype area to produce panels on the PIR Press.
8. Gain knowledge and understanding of the operation of the prototype area to become a competent team member.
9. Carry out a full analysis of the panels produced as detailed above.
10. Production of new or improved formulations for panels produced at Kingspan production sites.
11. Work with Chemical Process Engineers and their management from various manufacturing sites to produce panels.
12. Report on full analysis of the panels produced above to relevant stakeholders.
Record Keeping and Reporting
1. Record formulations and test data on the IKON shared drive.
2. Write comprehensive reports to keep the management team up to date on all projects.
3. Write comprehensive reports for Grant and Tax Claims.
4. Attend meetings within the team and with Senior Management to discuss the progress of these projects.
5. Produce presentations for these meetings.
6. Attend trade fairs and conferences, meet chemical suppliers to uncover new chemicals and new technology that can be used to advance IKON's technical abilities.
Health, Safety and Environmental
1. Handle mix and process chemicals in a safe and responsible manner. This will include writing and following Risk and COSHH assessments plus SOPs.
2. Ensure all your work areas are kept in a tidy and safe manner.
3. Work in a safe manner, not compromising your own or anyone else’s health and safety.
4. Conduct Housekeeping audits when requested.
IKON Support
1. Training of IKON chemical team members.
2. Support other departments and divisions in Kingspan where required either for production of samples or analysis.
3. Support IKON, completing any other tasks requested by the IKON Chemical R&D Manager.
4. Operating in compliance with ISO 37301, 9001, the company handbook and Code of Conduct.
5. Ensure compliance with the requirements of ISO 37301 Clause 5 sections 5.3.4., the company handbook and Code of Conduct.
6. Ensure compliance with the requirements of ISO 9001, including CE marking.
7. Report compliance concerns, issues, and failures; participate in training as required.
Key Skills & Experience
* Qualifications: Degree in Chemistry or related discipline.
* At least 3+ years of experience working in an instrumental laboratory environment or insulation chemical processing facility.
* Experience of a range of chemical analytical methods – GC, HPLC, Karl Fisher, Microscopy, FTIR etc.
* Good IT skills (MS Office) and record-keeping.
* Knowledge and application of Health & Safety protocols.
* EN certification & regulatory compliance Knowledge.
* Good people and communication skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects through to completion.
* Be willing to travel when there is need.
* Full clean Driving licence IRL/UK/EU.
* Ability to work safely and apply good housekeeping skills in all areas of work.
