The Opportunity
The role will cover the range of railway systems comprising signalling, electrical and telecommunication systems as well as dealing with the integration of these systems with the wider railway infrastructure and operational needs. The role includes systems assessment, scheme design, drafting of technical documents and specifications, management of technical information, support to other members of the rail team to enable Arup to deliver multi-disciplinary solutions for rail projects.
The candidate will be required to deliver materials to the project to the required technical standards in a timely manner.
* Railway Systems experience – signalling, electrification, telecommunications and related systems including one specialist area.
* Implement multidisciplinary design information exchange workflow for infrastructure projects.
* Manage small and medium work packages.
* Responsible for managing and technical oversight of a small team of supporting engineers and technicians.
* Prepare technical designs, drawings, reports, correspondence and other outputs in accordance with approved design standards and procedures in line with the project delivery programme.
* Ensure that relevant legislation, regulations, policies, strategies and technical guidance is interpreted, followed and communicated across the team with limited guidance from more senior members of staff.
* Implement the appropriate QA procedures for all deliverables and ensure compliance with H&S requirements.
* Communicate effectively and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of individuals.
As a Senior Rail Systems Engineer at Arup, you will:
* Carry out rail systems engineering design for various railway environments (e.g. light rail, commuter rail, freight rail, metro) covering signalling, electrical and telecommunications systems.
* Write or review rail systems specifications and standards for various railway environments as required.
* Conduct and implement engineering controls, requirements management, systems engineering, risk assessments and HAZOP analysis.
* Work on projects from concept design stage through to the construction stage.
* Attend meetings on site and monitor the construction while on site, answering any technical queries that may arise.
* Attend meetings with other members of the design team and Client to develop the designs of a project.
* Review other design team and subcontractor drawings and coordinate them with design drawings.
* Review any specialist design drawings submitted by contractors.
* Manage a team of junior engineers, technicians, and sub consultants as required within the rail group structure.
* Participate in the review of various projects within the team and share knowledge and skills.
* Participate in in-house and external continuing professional development.
* Manage own workload and others.
* Provide mentoring to junior engineers.
* Take responsibility for the designs carried out and develop appropriate communication skills.

We're looking for someone who is passionate about Rail. We also value:
* Bachelors Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
* Minimum of 5 to 10 years post graduate experience, preferably in an operational environment.
* Chartered or working towards chartered professional status.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Signalling/Telecoms/Electrical railway systems design and operating principles.
* Installation and maintenance.
* Troubleshooting, fault finding or related practical experience.
* Document control.
* Technical Documentation Preparation.
* Drafting of standards.
* Rail systems design and contract management.
* Testing and Commissioning experience.
