The nurse manager is accountable for the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care for Urology Day unit. This includes clinical, human resources, and financial management.
The role is accountable for clinical and administrative duties including productivity of the unit, service development and interdisciplinary relationship building and support.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
1. Manage the unit on a day-to-day basis to ensure optimal and safe care is provided to the clients. This includes patient care, administrative duties, staffing, consultant interaction and any other duties related to the safe care of patients.
2. Provides direct urology nursing care, alongside a team of urology trained competent staff.
3. Provides leadership and direction for the staff on the patient care unit while supporting and actualising the goals of the department, service and the Beacon Hospital.
4. Ensures the effective delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient care by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes on the patient care unit.
5. Recruits and retains competent, compassionate staff while monitoring performance standards and promoting fair labour practices.
6. Promotes a work environment that demonstrates caring by accessibility of safe equipment and adequate supplies in an efficiently arranged physical setting.
7. Operationalises and participates in continuous quality improvement and risk management programs at the unit level in a collaborative manner with multi-disciplinary colleagues.
8. Monitors fiscal budget to control operational and capital expenditures while monitoring and adjusting staffing patterns to improve unit productivity.
9. Identifies appropriate internal controls for department, provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
10. Participate actively in JCI accreditation.
11. Participates in auditing the services of the ward.
Clinical Responsibilities
The post holder will be familiar with and adhere to The Professional Scope of Nursing and Midwifery Practice Framework (NMBI, 2025).
The post holder will partake in the Total Quality Management processes thereby contributing to:
1. The identification of quality/policy/guideline issues.
2. The evaluation of current practices to best practice.
3. The setting of standards utilising structure, process and outcome.
4. All hospital, regional and national audit processes.
5. The Hospital Wide Accreditation Cycle.
Relationships
1. Maintains good working relationships with Theatre, Inpatient wards, other departments and with physicians, patients, families and outside agencies.
2. Communicates during the shift with the line manager when necessary.
3. Demonstrates the ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities.
4. Participates in ongoing consultation and collaboration with physicians and other care providers to maximize patient outcomes and unit specific goals.
5. Participates in unit-based and interdepartmental QI activities.
6. Demonstrates willingness to assist co-workers whenever needed.
Personal/Professional Responsibilities
1. Attend in a timely manner all mandatory education sessions.
2. Maintain a professional portfolio.
3. Ensure their professional and personal persona positively reflects the profession of nursing and Beacon Hospital.
4. Identify potential and beneficial topics for nursing research.
5. Utilise all practical opportunities to educate the patient and their families in collaboration with the assigned Clinical Nurse Specialist where applicable.
6. Attend appropriate study days/courses.
7. Be a preceptor and or supervisor to students/newly appointed staff.
8. Completes all performance evaluations for direct reporting staff.
Service Development
1. Work with line manager to develop new services and programmes; optimise existing programmes and manage performance enhancement initiatives.
2. Develop and implement new services and programmes.
3. Enhance existing services.
4. Support new business initiatives such as HSE or waiting list initiatives.
5. Engage with marketing and external agencies, networks and groups where required.
Clinical Administration and Projects
1. Work on plans and projects to optimise volume, case mix.
2. Participate in performance enhancement programmes including patient flow, scheduling of cases, productivity analysis, capacity planning, IT, processes and systems improvements.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
1. Maintains professional appearance and dress code.
2. Complies with guidelines for absence or tardiness.
3. Attends staff meetings, reads email and other postings.
4. Attends all required in-services.
5. All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments to assist as the patient needs fluctuate.
6. Wears Identification badge when working.
Person Specification
Qualifications
1. NMBI Registered General Nurse licence in good standing.
2. Preferably hold a post graduate qualification in urology.
3. Preferably hold a post graduate qualification in management.
Experience
1. Minimum of five years clinical with a minimum of (3) years’ experience in urology plus two years of progressive management experience required.
2. Experience with intravesical instillations of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
3. Confident and capable in the nursing management of urological conditions.
4. Urodynamics experience preferable.
5. The employee must speak, read and write grammatically correct English.
6. Candidates must possess teaching abilities, leadership qualities, professional judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and a sense of professional development.
7. Must demonstrate multi-tasking ability.
