We are seeking a Civil Engineer to join our operational management team in the west and mid west region of Ireland. The successful candidate will assist and oversee the management, maintenance, and development of the Shannon navigation, including refurbishment, construction, and maintenance works.
The Engineer will be based in Athlone and primarily responsible for land facilities from Athlone to Lanesborough and on-water works in the mid-Shannon area from Lough Ree to Limerick.
The KEY ACTIVITIES of this role include:
* Water Levels / Sluice Operations and Workboat Activities: Manage water levels on the South Shannon and the operations of sluices at Athlone Weir, Meelick Weir, and the New Cut.
* Operational Management: Supervise operational staff, liaise with consultants and contractors, design and realign navigation channels, undertake site surveys, prepare designs and planning submissions, and manage maintenance and construction programmes.
* Health and Safety: Possess awareness of health, safety, and welfare legislation relevant to maintenance and construction works.
* Environmental: Liaise with environmental bodies to ensure environmental requirements are agreed and take account of environmental legislation, directives, and issues in the construction of projects.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
* Possess a Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Level 8 in the National Framework of Qualifications) or an equivalent qualification.
* Hold a current driving license and/or possess access to a form of transport which will permit travel throughout Ireland.
* Possess knowledge and experience of key issues involved in Civil/Structural Engineering, particularly relating to a water-based environment.
* Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
* Possess knowledge and experience of dealing with health, safety, and welfare issues associated with construction and maintenance works.
* Have experience and ability in the use of IT-based engineering equipment/engineering design tools.
* Possess excellent project management and problem-solving skills.
* Have 2 years post-qualified experience of working in an operations and maintenance environment, at least one of which includes management of staff.
* Possess an understanding of environmental issues involved in the development of waterways.
* Have experience of surveying and a good understanding of Mapping in a GIS world.
* Possess an understanding of issues involved in working in two jurisdictions.
