Job Overview:
We are seeking a Chief Medical Scientist in Microbiology. You will manage the provision of a quality diagnostic service in partnership with the Laboratory Manager and Consultants. Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the Microbiology Laboratory, ensuring efficient and accurate diagnostic services. Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Work with the Laboratory Manager and Consultant staff in identifying and implementing operational processes to optimise the use of resources.
Participate in the future development of the Laboratory Service to support clinical needs and align with the Hospital's strategic plan.
Lead and train a team of skilled staff, promoting healthy working relationships. Participate in maintaining the ISO 15189 quality management system to ensure quality-focused results for patient care. Actively engage in continuing education and research activities. Perform routine and specialised work to the highest professional standards as determined by the Laboratory Manager. Ensure the quality of work aligns with Hospital policy and accreditation standards. Organize technical work to meet laboratory service timelines. Ensure adherence to relevant hospital policies and procedures. Manage safety, health, and welfare activities within the department, ensuring compliance with best practices. Participate in regular Health and Safety audits. Manage departmental staff resources, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and skill mix.
Qualifications:
BSc in Medical Science or equivalent. MSc or FIBMS in Microbiology, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM). CORU registration is mandatory. 7 years experience in a Microbiology laboratory with at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to lead a team. Strong leadership, organisational, and interpersonal skills. Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
