HSE Mid-West are currently recruiting for the role of Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner (cANP) – Epilepsy Location of the Post HSE Mid-West Acute Services –University Maternity Hospital Limerick and University Hospital Limerick
Post is structured on a 50:50 basis between the designated tertiary maternity service and the designated regional neurology hub service.
A panel may be formed as a result of this campaign for Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner (cANP) – Epilepsy, HSE Mid West Acute Servicesfrom which current and future, permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full or part-time duration may be filled
Purpose of the Post Under the direction of the Office of Quality and Clinical Care, the National Epilepsy Care Programme working collaboratively with the National Women and Infants Health Programme, has been charged with addressing the historic deficiencies in epilepsy care.
Particular emphasis is being placed on the care of women with epilepsy and their maternity journey (preconception to three months postnatally) through a comprehensive programme that delivers in a cohesive and integrated fashion between tertiary maternity / women's health services and neurology hub services.
Four core objectives have been identified:
1.
Improving and expanding access to WWE to expert care and evidence based information;
2.
Improving the quality of care for patients with epilepsy across the healthcare spectrum informed and guided by national and international best practice and guidelines including The Practice Guide for Management of Women with Epilepsy;
3.
Supporting and enabling the standardised care of women with epilepsy by participating and actively contributing to the education, training and continuing professional development of nurses, midwives, students and all relevant health care professionals; and
4.
Enabling the delivery of a life course approach to care for women with epilepsy with such care being delivered in an integrated and collaborative fashion between women's health and neurology specialist services.
The development and implementation of additional registered ANPs in Epilepsy working across maternity and neurology hub services is deemed a critical success factor.
It is expected that such RANPs will use their extensive clinical knowledge and expertise in this specialist area to provide safe, timely, evidenced base nurse-led care to patients at an advanced nursing level to meet the needs of patients with epilepsy within the designated maternity service and the designated neurology hub.
Under the direction of the assigned Consultant Neurologist, RANPs will undertake and document complete episodes of patient care, which include comprehensively assessing, diagnosing, planning, treating and discharging patients in accordance with collaboratively agreed local policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines and/or service level agreements/ memoranda of understanding.
The primary purpose of the post is to enable the cANP to
· undertake the necessary academic preparation;
· develop the clinical and leadership skills, competences and knowledge and
· prepare the associated documentation
required to enable the individual nurse to meet the NMBI Criteria for Registration as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner as set out in Advanced Practice (Nursing) Standards and Requirements (NMBI, 2017).
It is anticipated that the above will be undertake under the direction and with the support of the Health Care Provider's Advanced Practice Stakeholder Governance Group.
The scope of the cANP role must reflect the incremental development of expertise and as such, the cANP cannot deliver care as an autonomous practitioner.
The individual will be expected to complete and submit the necessary documentation for registration as an RANP with NMBI.
The value of the nursing contribution as a distinct profession must be safeguarded and articulated in the development of new services led by advanced nurse practitioners, complementing rather than replacing current services delivered by doctors (NMBI 2017 p.9).
The overall purpose of the post is to provide safe, timely, evidenced based nurse-led care to patients at an advanced nursing level.
This involves undertaking and documenting a complete episode of patient care (assess, diagnose, plan, treat and discharge patients) according to collaboratively agreed protocols and scope of practice in the clinical setting, demonstrating advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, clinical leadership and decision making skills.
The advanced practice role demonstrates a high degree of knowledge, skill and experience that is applied within the nurse-patient/client relationship to achieve optimal outcomes through critical analysis, problem solving and accurate decision-making (NMBI, 2017).
Central to this is the provision of quality care, a safe environment and processes for patients by the use of evidence based clinical guidelines that address patient expectations, promote wellness and evaluate care given.
The role will provide clinical leadership and professional scholarship in order to develop nursing practice and health policy at local, regional and national level.
The role will contribute to nursing research to shape and advance nursing practice, education and health care policy at local, national and international levels.
