We are currently expanding research on animal health and welfare, with a strong emphasis on improving welfare standards in European aquaculture while minimizing the use of veterinary drugs.The institute offers a collaborative, dynamic environment where cutting-edge research is translated into real-world applications.Position OverviewTyndall invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to the development of electrochemical sensors for monitoring biochemical markers related to animal health and welfare. This research will focus on the creation of sensor technologies for use in agritech, specifically targeting disease prevention and monitoring within aquaculture. This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of electrochemical sensor development, animal welfare, and agritech innovation.Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will work alongside the Tyndall Life Sciences Interface Group and work closely with multidisciplinary experts in microsystems technology, surface chemistry, and microfabrication. Your main responsibilities will include:Sensor Development: Design, develop, and integrate innovative electrochemical sensors for monitoring biochemical and chemical parameters, with a focus on applications in animal welfare.Project Management: Take ownership of day-to-day management of the research project, including meeting milestones, reporting, and ensuring high-quality outputs.Collaboration: Work closely with research teams and principal investigators to advance the project’s objectives and supervise students working on related projects.Publications and Dissemination: Publish research findings in high-impact academic journals, present results at conferences, and contribute to external reports for funding agencies.Other Duties:Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management Systems, Health and Safety standards, and other regulations.To carry out any additional duties that may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the postEssential CriteriaTo be considered for this position, candidates should meet the following criteria:PhD in a relevant field such as Engineering science, Sensors, or a related discipline.Proven experience in electrochemical sensor development, particularly for detection in complex media.A strong record of research outputs, including publications in sensor device and system development.Experience in the design, fabrication, and validation of electrochemical sensors.Excellent communication skills, with the ability to report research outcomes effectively and work with multidisciplinary teams.Desirable CriteriaCandidates with the following will be given preference:Evidence of entrepreneurial experience and creative skills/creativityA PhD in Engineering science or related fields.Expertise in the design and development of electrochemical sensors tailored for agritech applications.Background in electrochemistry, nanomaterial fabrication, or biomedical engineering.Experience with advanced characterization techniques and microsystem technology.Prior work in medical device design or related applications in animal health.Contract extension a possibility based on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.Appointment may be made on the UCC Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale €44,847- €51,313 p.a.
