The Emergency Department at St. James's Hospital seeks to provide the highest level of emergency care, ensuring maximum health and social gain for all patients suffering accidents or sudden illness.
The department has been at the forefront of innovation in Emergency Medicine in Ireland, offering a multidisciplinary approach that includes Consultants, Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Medical Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Nutrition, Speech and Language Therapy, and dedicated administrative support.
Collaboration and Support
The team is exceptionally active in collaboration with Intensive Care, Diagnostic Imaging, Psychological Medicine, and other specialties, promoting a strong ethos of education and training for trainees.
Our rota is fully compliant with the rest and maximum working hours requirements of the EWTD, ensuring a healthy work-life balance for our staff.
We offer excellent Consultant shop-floor support and a weekly formal Registrar training programme, as well as ample opportunities to participate in research and audit.
In addition, we run exam preparation modules for doctors preparing for the primary, intermediate, and final FRCEM examinations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Assessing patients as requested by the registrar shift leader and/or CNM in charge
* Showing initiative in helping to manage the departmental workload
* Supporting senior staff in the Resuscitation area
* Always communicating patient management decisions to the nurse in charge
* Ensuring adequate patient handover
* Recognising one's need for senior support
The post holder will develop an appropriate knowledge base by attending EM teaching sessions, appropriate CPD meetings, and undertaking private study.
Balancing their educational needs with service commitment, the post holder will participate in clinical risk management and audit activities in the department.
They will also be supportive of students, interns, nursing staff, and other members of the Emergency department team.
The post holder will demonstrate appropriate levels of professionalism in all aspects of work and behaviour.
Education and Training
* Participate in mandatory and recommended training programmes in accordance with organisational/professional requirements
* Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge by actively engaging in continuing professional education and development
* Engage in planning and performance reviews as required with the Supervising Consultant
The post holder will comply with the policies, procedures, and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.
They will document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards, and accidents, bringing them to the attention of relevant/designated individual(s) in line with best practice.
The post holder will work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others.
They will be aware of risk management issues, identify risks, and take appropriate action.
The post holder will promote a culture that values diversity and respect.
Administratively, they will ensure good working practice and adherence to standards of best practice.
They will promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the service, identifying changing needs, and opportunities to improve services.
The post holder will assist the Consultant in service development, including policy development and implementation.
They will ensure the maintenance of accurate records in line with best clinical governance, the organisation's requirements, and the Freedom of Information Act.
The post holder will provide reports and other information/statistics as required.
They will engage in service audit and demonstrate the achievement of the service objectives.
Representing the department/profession/team at meetings and conferences as appropriate, the post holder will keep up to date with change and developments within the Irish Health Service.

Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications and/or experience:
* Applicants will have completed Internship prior to the commencement of post.
* Candidates may wish to undertake a post in Emergency Medicine as a component of general professional training in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Intensive Care Medicine, or General Practice.
