Lucan Educate Together National School is seeking a Treasurer for the Board of Management.
The BoM meet in LETNS 9 times per year, for a 2 hour meeting, which is typically held weekday evenings. The BoM sit for a 3 year term, which we are 6 months into currently. Due to a change in personal circumstances of a Board member, we now require a new person to join the existing BoM, and ideally to fill the position of Treasurer.
The role of the Treasurer in a Board of Management is governed by the Education Act, as well as the Dept of Education Governance Manual for Primary Schools 2023-2027. LETNS also follows the Educate Together Patronage Manual and complies with all Dept of Education guidelines.
There is further training available via the Board of Management, either through the Educate Together national organisation or via the FSSU (Financial Support Services Unit).
Key responsibilities of the Treasurer on the Board of Management include:
1. Financial oversight and accurate accounting of the financial records of the school, upholding transparency, compliance, and safeguard measures to ensure correct management of school funds and reporting obligations.
2. Budgeting and reporting – preparing financial reports for Board meetings and updates to the Board regarding financial matters.
3. Compliance – ensuring best practices and adherence to regulations, e.g., annual accounting returns to the FSSU and key reporting dates/duties.
4. Fund management – monitoring income and expenditure, authorizing payments, overseeing contracts, and fundraising activities.
5. Audit coordination – collaborating with auditors and external accountants for the inspection of financial records.
Our Board is made up of the following:
1. The Principal
2. The Chairperson, selected by Executive (patron)
3. A member of the teaching staff, elected by the staff
4. 2 parent representatives, elected by the PTA
5. 1 direct nominee of the Executive
6. 2 independent representatives, elected by the other 6 members
Ideally, candidates will have some element of financial experience; however, expressions of interest are welcome from all backgrounds, and each candidate will be considered on their merit.
The next meeting of the BoM is on 3rd April. Expressions of interest are currently being sought in advance of this date. If you would like to hear more, please contact the Executive via executive@letns.org to arrange a confidential discussion and to share additional information.
