Design Engineer
Main Purpose of Role:
The Design Engineer is part of the R&D team responsible for delivering new products and continuously improving existing ones. The role involves participating in design-related engineering activities, striving for a best-in-class approach, and supporting the development of a performance-driven culture.
Key Accountabilities:
1. Undertake mechanical design activities throughout the product lifecycle management process.
2. Maintain a sound theoretical understanding of design technology and apply practical engineering knowledge to planning, specifying, problem-solving, and solution evaluation.
3. Promote innovation and advancements in technology, participate in research, and specify design solutions.
4. Complete activities on time and within budget to meet programme requirements.
5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of design principles, materials selection, and optimisation.
6. Contribute to continuous improvement by reviewing technology, processes, and outcomes, and implementing new initiatives.
7. Collaborate with third-party design expertise as required to meet NPI and VI process programmes.
8. Develop and maintain professional competencies and skills through ongoing training and development.
9. Communicate information and knowledge to support effective decision-making.
10. BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH COLLEAGUES.
11. Undertake supplier liaison against vendor management process requirements.
12. Gain an understanding of customers and markets, and work with others to improve customer service.
13. Manage complex challenges in delivery, prioritisation, and quality to deliver NPI activities successfully.
Required Skills and Experience:
* Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles in relevant technology fields.
* Strong background in product design and development, or continuous improvement in a technical/engineering/manufacturing discipline.
* Awareness of effective planning and implementation of design activity.
* Strong analytical and critical reasoning skills.
* Team player with excellent communication and networking skills, strong drive, initiative, and self-motivation.
* Able to balance competing priorities and drive issues to completion.
* Awareness of markets and customers.
Desirable Criteria:
* Experience in areas such as materials selection, sheet metal design, and design for manufacture.
* Excellent technical experience and advanced knowledge of own discipline, and working knowledge of other disciplines.
* Degree and/or professional qualification in a relevant technical/engineering discipline.
* Significant post-qualification experience in engineering and new product design roles.
