ABOUT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) for its law enforcement services, its Regional Training Center, and its Dispatch Unit; the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board for its Crime Lab; the Bomb Squad Commanders Advisory Board for its Explosive Ordinance Unit. Additionally, the agency's health care provider, Wellpath, has experience working with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC).
The Sheriff's Office has a current budget of approximately $600 million and has over 1700 authorized positions, including in excess of 1000 sworn personnel. The agency's Chief Executive Officer is Sheriff / Coroner Yesenia L. Sanchez, who is assisted in the operation of the agency by Undersheriff April Luckett-Fahimi, Assistant Sheriffs Emmanuel Christy and Daniel McNaughton.
The Sheriff of Alameda County is responsible for a vast array of tasks and duties, including the following:
1. Providing security to the Consolidated Superior Courts
2. Operating the Coroner’s Bureau
3. Operating a full-service criminalistics laboratory
4. Performing Civil Process
5. Operating the County Jail (Santa Rita)

THE POSITION
Latent Fingerprint Examiner is the entry-level in the Latent Fingerprint Examiner classification series in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. The Latent Fingerprint Examiner classification is a non-supervisory position responsible for the identification, classification, comparison, and processing of latent fingerprints. The Latent Fingerprint Examiner receives training in latent evidence procedures, evaluations, comparison, and identifications.
Under direct supervision of the Identification Supervisor, learns to perform print examination and classification of prints and impressions in the Central Identification Bureau. Conducts latent print processing to evaluate, compare, and identify single, multiple, partial, or distorted latent prints; operates the Automated Fingerprint/Biometric Identification System (AFIS/ABIS) and related equipment; prepares all related reports and/or exhibits on latent casework for law enforcement agencies and/or courtroom presentation; testifies as a fingerprint expert; and performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I
Experience: The equivalent of eighteen (18) months full-time experience as a Senior Fingerprint Examiner with minimal supervision and 160 hours of approved fingerprint training in the instruction of fingerprint classification, identification, and comparison in the Alameda County classified service.
OR II
Experience: The equivalent of four (4) years of increasingly responsible full-time experience in a fingerprint classification in a law enforcement agency, which includes 160 hours of approved, certified fingerprint training in the instruction of fingerprint classification, identification, and comparison completed within the past three (3) years and of which a minimum of 18 months was performed at a level comparable to or higher than that of a Senior Fingerprint Examiner.
License: Must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
Special Requirements:
1. Incumbents must be able to testify in court as a latent fingerprint expert within 36 months.
2. Vision: Using both eyes, must have far vision of at least 20/20 without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must have near vision, as measured by optometric examination, sufficient to perform fingerprint identification, classification, and related duties.
3. Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds.
4. Successful completion of a thorough background investigation.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

1. Henry System of Fingerprint classification.
2. Working knowledge of fingerprint classification, searching, and filing methods.
3. Methods of identification, interpretation, and preservation of evidence.
4. Criminal and courtroom procedures and legal principles.
5. Working knowledge of automated fingerprint identification systems.
6. Laws of evidence and chain of custody.
Ability to:
1. Perform assigned tasks according to prescribed procedures.
2. Establish fingerprint identifications by scientific methods.
3. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with representatives of law enforcement agencies.
4. Write clear, concise, and complete narrative reports and correspondence.
5. Qualify and testify in a court of law.
6. Operate AFIS/ABIS and other related systems and equipment related to latent casework and criminal records systems for retrieval and input.
7. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
EXAMINATION COMPONENTS
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
1. A review of applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those applicants who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
2. A review of supplemental questionnaires to select the best qualified applicants to continue in the process.
3. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the applicant's final examination score. The oral interview may contain situational exercises.
