The role
The Customs & Trade Compliance Manager will be responsible for building the Customs and Trade compliance function from the ground up, ensuring compliance with all customs regulations and trade compliance requirements for the company’s distribution operation. This role will oversee import and export activities, manage regulatory requirements, and develop best practices to ensure smooth cross-border trade operations while mitigating risks and costs. This is a fantastic opportunity to create a new function and team within the business and become part of the high performing Supply Chain team.
Key responsibilities
* Establish the Customs and Trade compliance function within the Valeo business.
* Ensure compliance with all regulatory and company procedures, including Irish Import and Export customs regulations.
* Manage Import & Export customs declarations, including ENS, PBN, TRACES submissions, and INIS pre-notifications.
* Liaise with regulatory authorities, traders, freight forwarders, and distributors to facilitate smooth customs processes.
* Create and discharge T1 & T2 documents while managing Economic procedure management (Inward Processing, End Use, Outward Processing Relief) and Simplified Procedures (ISP, EIDR).
* Plan, direct, and control UK import activities on a daily basis, ensuring all relevant documentation is in place for seamless goods transition.
* Ensure accurate system updates by loading consignment details before arrival/departure and checking documentation for accuracy.
* Complete Import & Export entries in accordance with received documentation and oversee Export Customs Entries.
* Monitor incoming information, highlight potential issues, and delegate tasks as necessary, keeping management informed.
* Execute Import month-end routines and provide early warnings to managers regarding potential deadline risks.
* Take ownership of accounting issues and queries, assisting in follow-ups with Revenue when required.
* Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, ensuring concerns are addressed and corrective actions are implemented.
* Assist with insurance claims following company procedures.
* Update and verify customs data in systems, ensuring timely submission to Revenue and customers.
* Perform ad hoc duties as required to support business operations and the wider supply chain team.
Knowledge, Skills, And Experience
* 5+ Years proven experience in customs and trade compliance within the food manufacturing or distribution industry.
* In-depth knowledge of Irish, EU and 3rd country customs regulations, SPS requirements, and Brexit-related trade policies including knowledge of INIS, TSS, Thyme-IT, NCIS-P5.
* Experience with import/export documentation, customs software, and trade management systems.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on process improvement.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to work with cross-functional teams.
* Professional qualification in customs compliance, trade law, or supply chain management is an advantage.
* Highly proficient in Excel.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* 3rd level degree in a relevant discipline.
