Background:
Surgical training in Ireland enjoys a global reputation based on a proud tradition of producing generations of leaders in surgery around the world. RCSI has continued to nurture and develop future surgical leaders through our comprehensive surgical training pathway, academic and Master's programs, and by supporting surgeons in practice with Continuing Professional Development.
Objective of this Post:
The principal objective of the post is to contribute to the development, organisation, and delivery of RCSI's Continuous Professional Development in Surgical Skills, Surgical Science and Surgical practice. Although the role will primarily focus on Surgical Skills, Surgical Science and Practice are areas that NCHD's across the country have asked for increased support and we hope this role will help address these gaps in the coming years.
Specific Responsibilities include:
1. Undertake education needs analysis to identify the gaps in the education and skills needs of Surgical NCHDs and the wider surgical workforce.
2. Liaise with specialty representatives to identify education gaps for NCHDs and support the development and delivery of new specialty-specific courses.
3. Help develop and support the adjunct faculty to ensure the quality of the courses and that the stated learning objectives are met.
4. Facilitate delivery of teaching of Continuous Professional Development Programme in Surgical Science, Skills and Practice.
5. Assist the operations team in planning and organising teaching days, ensuring smooth coordination of all aspects.
6. Contribute to quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of existing courses.
7. Support the recruitment and development of adjunct faculty for curriculum delivery.
8. Demonstrate a collaborative spirit and be committed to fostering a positive, supportive team environment.
Person Specification Essential:
Essential
1. Have an active, informed and continued interest in the postgraduate education and career guidance of surgeons in training.
2. Be a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in Ireland.
3. Be on the Specialist Register and in good standing with the Irish Medical Council.
4. Hold a permanent public appointment as a Consultant Surgeon within the state.
5. Practice in a hospital which is recognised for training.
6. Experience in teaching particularly in a clinical or simulation setting.
7. Enthusiasm for teaching and the ability to engage learners in technical skills.
8. Strong organisational skills to manage the coordination of teaching days and events.
Desirable
1. Hold a formal postgraduate qualification in education or healthcare education.
2. Possess excellent computer, presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
3. Strong commitment to quality improvement and personal professional development.
