Essential Qualifications and Skills
* Minimum of PhD, or exceptionally, equivalent* research experience (including industrial R&D) evident from publications in life sciences or related disciplines (haematology, biomedical science/engineering).
*EU defines PhD equivalent as 4 years fulltime research after primary degree.
* Biomechanical Engineering or B.Eng. in Mechanical or equivalent.
* Experience in 3D CAD modelling and 3D printing.
* Ability to work autonomously, present results to a targeted audience and summary reports on a timely basis to the MET Technology Gateway Manager and Principal Investigator(s) (PIs) as assigned and relevant stakeholders.
* Must be able to plan, organise, and implement multiple concurrent tasks and projects.
* Experience of working with clients, managing the client interface, and developing and agreeing high quality project proposals and/or quotations, in conjunction with R&D colleagues, and in response to client requirements.
* An ability to manage resources. A can-do, proactive and innovative attitude with a passion for driving change and fostering collaboration.
* Excellent team working, interpersonal, communications and presentation skills particularly in relation to dealing with senior personnel from industry, agencies and internal stakeholders.
* Self-starter – ability to work on own initiative within clearly defined guidelines and as part of a team in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
* Fluency in English and excellent written and oral presentation skills.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
* PhD or MSc in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technologies or related disciplines.
* Experience in designing and fabricating clinically relevant in- vivo simulation systems.
* Experience in Fluoroscopic and CT imagery and segmentation software such as Mimics or 3DSlicer.
* An influential team member and fully motivated.
* Good communication skills as well as ability to work in a team culture.
* Good initiative, flexibility and good organisational skills.
* Technical troubleshooting skills.
* Aware of the standards required for medical device testing.
Overview of the Role
The Enterprise Ireland Medical and Engineering Technologies (MET) Gateway is an applied research centre, dedicated to supporting Research, Development and Innovation activities in the MedTech, Life Sciences and Engineering Sectors. We provide our clients with innovative solutions which accelerate the medical device design and validation processes. Through active engagement with clinical and industrial partners, we produce scientific knowledge and technology outputs across a range of streams, including Medical imaging technologies, Anatomical Modelling and Physiological Replication, Data Analytics and Visualisation, Design Engineering and Verification and Medicinal Nutrition & Sport. ATU’s Medical and Engineering Technologies Gateway integrates a multidisciplinary team of researchers collaborating to provide clinically inspired solutions to clinicians and the MedTech Sector.
ATU’s MET Technology Gateway delivers unique research, design and development to advance pre-clinically relevant in vitro simulators that replicate various parts of the human anatomy. ATU’s MET Technology Gateway is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and talented research engineer to work on commercial research activities for the medical device industry. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates with significant interest in research and development in medical device technologies in the MET Technology Gateway at ATU Galway City.
Duties
The Researcher will:
* Work closely with the MET Technology Gateway Manager and Principal Investigators (PIs) to deliver industry-specific projects and agreed specifications on agreed timescales.
* Assist the team to generate device and equipment ideas and concepts in collaboration with industry partner and clinicians.
* Assist in planning and implementing the work activities of the MET research programme.
* Work and interact on a day-to-day basis with other team members as required.
* Share responsibility for ensuring adherence to projects’ timelines.
* Demonstrate technical ability through the application of research skills, medical technologies & biomedical engineering approaches.
* Perform research and technical tasks as assigned.
* Ensure that research requirement in terms of documentation of the project tasks, milestones and deliverables are implemented and adhered to.
* Develop relationships with MET Technology Gateway PIs, academic collaborators, clinicians and industry partner representatives.
* Report regularly on progress and suggest future areas for improvement and development.
* Communicate ideas, and information clearly and effectively with industry and outside suppliers; interface with veterinarians, vendors and other technical consultants when required.
* Maintain laboratory notebooks, research records and generate technical reports and data as required by the management team.
* Support the implementation and maintenance of the ISO 9001:2015 accredited Quality Management System.
* Assist in the identification of intellectual property generated in the work programme.
* Maintain confidentiality of all background IP, foreground IP, and research results emerging from projects.
* Ensure that project work is performed in line with Health and Safety and other relevant Institute policies.
* Assist the MET Technology Gateway manager in written and oral report preparation.
* Provide training to other team members as required.
* Prepare and deliver project progress presentations.
Salary
Salary: IUA PD1 point 1 (€45,847.00) to point 3 (€48,412.00) Plus 20% pension Contribution.
*Starting salary is dependent on funding availability & experience and will also be market driven and discipline related.
