Occupational Therapy Assistant – CDNT
The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) will work as part of the Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT) in Leitrim, providing essential support to Occupational Therapists (OTs) in delivering therapeutic services to children and young people with disabilities. The role involves assisting with the preparation and implementation of therapy programs, supporting children and their families, and helping the multidisciplinary team in promoting independence and participation for children with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities.
Key Responsibilities of an Occupational Therapist Assistant
* Work under the direction of the Occupational Therapists to help deliver therapy programs tailored to the individual needs of children with developmental and physical disabilities.
* Support children during therapy sessions, including in clinic, school, home, or community settings, reinforcing therapeutic exercises, activities, and strategies prescribed by the OT.
* Assist in developing skills in areas such as motor coordination, sensory processing, self-care, play, and social interaction.
* Assist with preparing materials, equipment, and resources needed for therapy sessions, ensuring they are age-appropriate and relevant to the child’s developmental needs.
* Set up and tidy therapy spaces for both individual and group sessions.
* Support the OT in the implementation of group therapy programs focused on areas such as sensory integration, motor skills development, or social interaction.
* Carry out exercises and activities prescribed by the OT, offering hands-on support to ensure proper execution of tasks.
* Provide feedback to the OT regarding the child’s progress, engagement, and any challenges observed during sessions.
* Work with parents and caregivers to demonstrate how to carry out specific exercises and activities at home.
* Provide basic education and advice to families on how they can support their child’s development in daily activities and routines.
* Communicate effectively and empathetically with families, listening to their concerns and ensuring their views are considered in the child’s therapy program.
* Maintain professional and clear communication with the wider team to ensure that any concerns or observations are addressed promptly.
* Collaborate with other members of the CDNT, including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Social Workers, and Psychologists, to provide holistic care to children and their families.
* Participate in team meetings, contributing relevant observations and insights about the children being supported.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of therapy sessions, including details of activities carried out and observations on the child’s performance.
* Ensure all documentation adheres to data protection (GDPR) standards and CDNT policies.
* Assist in the maintenance, cleaning, and storage of therapy equipment.
* Help in the ordering and sourcing of materials, tools, and resources needed for therapy sessions, ensuring they are appropriate and safe for use.
* Participate in relevant training sessions, workshops, and in-service education to build knowledge and skills in supporting children with disabilities.
* Keep up-to-date with new approaches, techniques, and tools in paediatric occupational therapy by attending team development meetings or seeking learning opportunities.
Essential Qualifications & Experience of Occupational Therapist Assistant
* A relevant qualification in Occupational Therapy Assistance, Healthcare Assistance, or a related field.
* Training or certification in child development or disability services is an advantage but not essential.
* Previous experience working with children, ideally within a disability or healthcare setting.
* Familiarity with supporting children with physical, sensory, or developmental needs is desirable.
* Experience working in a team-based environment and a multidisciplinary team approach is a plus.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with children, families, and colleagues.
* Ability to follow instructions and implement therapy programs as directed by Occupational Therapists.
