We are currently recruiting a Senior Medical Scientist, Histology, full time, maternity leave locum cover, specified purpose contract.
1.0 WTE / 35 Hours per week over Monday Friday on site attendance.
Job Purpose:
To work under the direction of the Consultant Pathologist to manage a partly outsourced multidisciplinary laboratory service; deliver on site a comprehensive range of core Histology services to the highest standards of quality and care and to manage all aspects of quality management system to the standard of an accredited laboratory including regular meetings.
To work as part of a team, to promote and develop best patient care in the laboratory in conjunction with the Consultant Pathologist and the Laboratory Clinical Team.
Key Responsibilities The appointee will be responsible for the managing all aspects of the laboratory and carrying out of duties in accordance with the Laboratory policy.
S/he will be required to bring to the attention of the Consultant Pathologist any difficulties or problems encountered in the performance of technical work or quality management to the required standard and to develop and maintain the quality policies and procedures of the laboratory to the standard of an accredited laboratory.
Clinical Duties Perform routine histologic investigations to the highest professional standards as determined by laboratory management.
Ensure that all investigations of patient samples including pre analytic and post analytic processes are performed to the highest standard using approved methods and QC Systems.
Authorise completed results as delegated by the Consultant Pathologist.
Oversee tracking/tracing of outsourced investigations.
Ensure that problems/results relating to the clinical management of patients are brought to the attention of appropriate Medical Staff in line with Department policy.
Ensure familiarity with the approved methods and techniques that apply to the Department assigned to.
Provide direct operational service within the Department in the Laboratory to which assigned and, if necessary, provide direct maintenance of the equipment.
Ensure the general care of the Laboratory and apparatus in the carrying out of duties.
Receive and record details concerning errors, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate the circumstances with appropriate staff members and take the necessary action(s).
Report the findings as required and as determined by the Consultant Pathologist.
Chair monthly laboratory meetings and lead QA meetings.
Participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital policy in co-operation with the Consultant Pathologist.
Administrative Duties Participate in the maintenance of levels of stock of Laboratory reagents and materials.
Ensure that policy relating to Laboratory record keeping is followed.
Participate in the operation of a computer-integrated management system for the Laboratory.
Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant Pathologist, appropriate compliance with international and national guidelines and standards for the provision of Laboratory Services and actively participate in internal and external quality control, quality assurance, audit and accreditation.
Participate in the provision of appropriate statistical and management information.
Co-ordinate and carry out the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents according to laboratory Hospital policy.
Co-operate with procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the Laboratory area.
Participate with the Consultant in identifying and implementing operational processes to the standards of best practice to optimise use of resources.
Agree annual objectives related to the post with an appropriate senior supervisor and liaise regularly with progress reports.
Co-operate with arrangements in the Laboratory for educating and training other staff.
Facilitate arrangements in the Laboratory for educating and training postgraduate students, medical students and other work experience students, etc.

Participate in Hospital Committees as requested.

health and safety, infection control, storage and use of controlled drugs etc Ensure a safe environment for patients, relatives, staff and visitors in accordance with the obligations under the Health and Safety Legislation 2005 Quality, Risk and Patient Safety Participate in the Hospitals Accreditation Process and contribute to on-going monitoring, audit and evaluation of the service as appropriate Participate in quality and patient safety improvement initiatives, as required Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications: Professional Qualifications & Experience (a)Be registered, or be eligible for registration, on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.
And (b)Possess one of the following NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualifications or equivalent accredited by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine; MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).
MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin).
MSc Clinical Chemistry, University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD).
MSc Biomedical Science, University of Ulster (UU) MSc Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT)/University College Cork (UCC).
MSc Biomedical Science, Munster Technological University (MTU)/University College Cork (UCC).
MSc Molecular Pathology, Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT)/University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD).. Or (c)An equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
Or Possess Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine awarded before July 2018.
Or (d)Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical Science (Awarded prior to 1999).
And (e)Possess four years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of four years full time clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist.
And (f)Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development And (g)Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office And (h)Provide proof of Statutory Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU before a contract of employment can be issued.
Annual registration On appointment, practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.
And Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).
