Overview of role:
Ensure the provision of quality patient care, whilst maximising efficiency in accordance with company policies and procedures. Provision of Medical Services in Medical and Radiation Oncology working for UPMC Ireland at Bon Secours Radiotherapy Centre Cork (in partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Maintains an atmosphere of caring, concern, and support for patients, visitors, medical staff and co-workers on a consistent basis and works effectively as part of a team.
2. Completes patient assessment within time frame laid down in Departmental policy.
3. Communicates to inpatient staff and referring physicians clinical and treatment related information as needed.
4. Assists with scheduling of required outpatient lab tests, x-rays, scans, etc. as needed.
5. Maintains standards in all aspects of work, with reference to current standards of practice.
6. Maintains current BLS skills and attend all in-house health and safety training (e.g., fire, manual handling etc.) as required.
7. Performs related responsibilities as required e.g., patient reviews, cannulation and assisting with radiation treatment planning.
8. Assist with audits and research as needed or required by the department.
Skills Essential to the Post:
1. Current registration with the Irish Medical Council.
2. Must possess competent clinical and interactive skills with adult and geriatric patients.

Completion of Mandatory Training as required by UPMC Management, including but not limited to: Fire Training - Annual, Radiation Safety Training - Annual, Infection Prevention and Control Training - Annual, BCLS Training - Biennial, ICHGCP Training - Biennial, ICORG PI Training - Triennial, Manual Handling and Patient Movement Training - Triennial.
Experience:
Appropriate post registration clinical experience as determined by the Medical Director.
General Personal Competencies:
Provision of an open caring environment for all referred patients, where proper explanation of treatment approach, careful treatment delivery and appropriate follow up is provided. All posts in UPMC Whitfield Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager and/or hospital management. Maintain strict confidentiality with patient and employee or any other information in accordance with all UPMC Whitfield Hospital policies and procedures in the electronic medical record.
Clinical Duties:
Provision of medical services within the scope of the Departmental Policy for the provision of care in the inpatient and outpatient settings, on site at UPMC Whitfield Hospital. Thorough clinical evaluation, careful explanation to patients and family and considered and collaborative decision making is necessary for the proper delivery of radiation and medical oncology services to the patients referred to our facility. Liaison with other clinical disciplines within the department (Nursing, Radiation Therapy, Physics, Medical Oncology, Pharmacy) in relation to patient care. Liaison with the wider hospital for any function related to the care of a radiotherapy or medical oncology patient, with inpatient staff for our patients in the ward, with radiology for any investigations, with the laboratory, with theatre for any patients booked for procedures. Provide cover for our department on a rostered basis to ensure on-site Physician presence at all time when there are patients being treated. Participate in an on-call roster – possibly in conjunction with the NCHD’s of the main hospital. Possibility of being trained to perform procedures such as prostate biopsy and fiducial marker placement.
Radiation Treatment Planning:
The provision, with the appropriate assistance of Dosimetrist and Physicist support, under supervision by a Consultant Radiation Oncologist, of contouring for the purpose of treatment planning. Participation with Medical Physics staff in the process of treatment planning.
Radiation Treatment Delivery:
In line with the relevant departmental policy, it is a requirement, where possible, for there to be a Physician on site at all times while patients are receiving radiation treatment. In conjunction with the Consultant Radiation Oncologist and the allied health professional teams within the department, oversight of on treatment evaluations and medical care of patients on active radiotherapy treatment programmes. Accurate and complete, legible record keeping. Timely maintenance of Physician related administrative function including all documentation in the electronic medical record.
Quality Assurance:
Participation in any and all Quality Control related functions as set down by the Medical Director, Management meetings (Medical Director), New Patient Review Meetings, Planning Review Meetings, Morbidity & Mortality Review, Continuous Quality Initiative Meetings, Radiation Safety Committee Meetings, Hospital Management Meetings (Medical Director).
Education & Research:
Participation in Departmental Educational Meetings. Mandatory Clinical and non-Clinical Training (BLC, GCP, Fire safety etc.), UPMC/D3 e-Rounds, Other education activity (Conferences, lectures etc.) to meet the requirements of the statutory rules regarding Professional Competence Assurance, as well as to acquire and maintain the necessary skills relevant to the proper function of UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre in partnership with Bons Secours Hospital in Cork. Participation, within the departmental framework and guidelines, in research which may be multi-institutional (ICORG) or internal.

Appropriate undergraduate and postgraduate qualification that enables full registration with the Irish Medical Council on the General Current Registration with the Irish Medical Council (Copy of Certificate).
Current Medical Insurance Liability (Copy of Certificate from HR).
Current Certificate of Compliance with Professional Competence.
Current Documents certifying compliance with mandatory training programs (BLS, GCP, Radiation Safety, Fire Safety etc.).
