Contract: Permanent
Hours: 7 hr per week (1 day)
Salary range: Healthcare Consolidated PayScale’s March 2025
Reporting to: The Chief Executive Officer
The Chaplaincy Department of Clontarf Hospital operates on an interdenominational basis and is staffed accordingly. All Chaplaincy facilities are shared among the personnel of the accredited churches assigned to the Hospital, namely Church of Ireland, Methodist, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic. We acknowledge that today the wider Hospital community is multicultural and multi-faith and cares for people of all denominations and everyone regardless of faith affiliation and those who profess no faith.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
* Completed a B.A. degree in theology at a recognised institute
* Completed three units of Clinical Pastoral Education in an approved centre or equivalent course
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Excellent organisational skills
DESIRABLE:
* Experience working in a healthcare setting as a chaplain
KEY ROLE:
The key role of the Chaplain at Clontarf Hospital is to provide non-denominational spiritual support for people with emotional needs, grief, vulnerability, loss, or change in their lives while in Clontarf Hospital. This is done through:
* Advocacy and mediation: mediates between patients, families and staff. This is particularly helpful when families need help understanding medical terminology, hospital procedures or making complex health care decisions.
* Crisis intervention and emotional support: When patients or their families receive difficult news the chaplain can be called to provide immediate emotional support, offering a calming presence, helping patients and families deal with grief, fear and uncertainty.
* Family and staff counselling: Chaplains serve patients and offer emotional and spiritual support to families struggling to understand a loved one’s condition.
* Spiritual counselling and guidance: Hospital chaplains provide one-on-one spiritual support to patients of all faiths and beliefs, helping them process complex emotions and find comfort. They may lead prayers, offer religious guidance or simply be a compassionate listener for those seeking peace.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Service Delivery
* Ensure service is delivered to all stakeholders in line with hospital policies and procedures and service level agreements.
* Liaise with all stakeholders to ensure that services meet expectations. Stakeholders will include but are not restricted to; Executive Management Team, Chief Operations Manager, General Services Manager, Nurse Managers, Department Heads, Health and Safety.
* Work as part of the team to ensure good communication within the overall department by appropriate means including establishing regular staff meetings in line with the hospital’s communication strategy. Be aware of individual responsibility.
* Promote awareness of confidentiality and good record handling practices.
* Motivate and guide individuals and/or groups towards organisational and departmental objectives.
* Manage and liaise with the various Volunteers and participate in their development, record keeping and training.
* In conjunction with the HR Department develop policies procedures and guidelines to ensure service is provided in line with best practice and ensure communication of these to all relevant stakeholders.
* Clontarf Hospital values the Chaplain’s role in providing spiritual and emotional support. The expectations for the role recognize the current limited hours of 7 per week.
Service Planning
* Participate in the promotion of the chaplaincy service and identify opportunities for service improvement and initiate steps to accomplish same.
* Participate in the preparation and presentation of reports as required.
* Keep abreast of changes in service delivery methods and projects within the hospital to ensure chaplaincy services can respond appropriately, e.g. Clinical care programmes etc.
* Produce an annual report on chaplaincy services across the sites as part of the multi-denominational ethos.
Quality Assurance and Risk Management
* As part of your team develop and ensure good record keeping.
* Keep quality at the forefront of the service provided.
* Be compliant with the General Data Commission Regulations (GDPR) and Children’s First as a mandated person.
* Ensure that all records in regards to incidents and events are stored appropriately and develop systems for the production of data.
Personal
* Ensure Compliance with hospital policies regarding absenteeism and other HR policies.
* Ensure compliance with mandatory training e.g. children’s first, data protection, hand hygiene, manual handling and fire training.
* Undertake such training as is made available or is deemed necessary to ensure efficient work practices.

Garda Vetting
* Garda vetting is role dependent and may be carried out.
* An employee will not take up employment until the Garda Vetting process has been completed and the hospital is satisfied that such an appointment does not pose a risk to clients, service users and employees.
* You will be contacted post-interview to complete a form, provide ID and engage in the online Garda Vetting process.
The successful candidate will carry out the following duties. Please note this list is not exhaustive and additional duties may be required but will be discussed in detail with the line manager.
