Portiuncula University Hospital is a Model 3 hospital providing 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine and critical care along with Emergency Department and maternity services to adults and children in the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly. The hospital has natural referral pathways to the Midlands, particularly in respect of patients that are referred in via the Emergency Department and discharged back for appropriate care.

Portiuncula University Hospital comprises of 194 beds which includes plans for a new 50 bed ward block opening in August 2024. Portiuncula University Hospital provides 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine, critical care, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology along with a 24/7 Emergency Department. The hospital serves the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly and has a natural referral pathway to the Midlands.
Ballinasloe is the largest town in County Galway. The town has excellent junior and secondary schools and is close to the University of Galway and the Technology University of Shannon in Athlone. The town is served by public transport to the major centres and offers an abundance of sports, leisure and entertainment facilities.
Education & Training:
Portiuncula University Hospital is a recognised site for training of undergraduate medical students from University of Galway and graduate entry medical students from University of Limerick. We are an accredited site for intern training for the West North West Intern Training program. We offer Basic Specialist Training in General Medicine to Senior House Officers on the RCPI training program and also an approved site with the ICGP West training scheme for GP training.

ICPOP MEDICAL REGISTRAR - INTEGRATED CARE PROGRAMME FOR OLDER PERSONS - 0.5 COMMUNITY (ICPOP)/0.5 FRAILTY AT FRONT DOOR (FFD)
The role of the Registrar will include:
1. Facilitate the day to day running of the hub (ICPOP) and frailty at the front door (FFD) in conjunction with ANPs and Consultants.
2. Provide rapid access to multidisciplinary comprehensive geriatric assessment for older people.
3. Provide a continuity of care for these complex older patients who attend regularly.
4. Facilitate Tilt Table and other diagnostic testing for patients attending the hub.
5. Act as a link between ED doctors and GPs about appropriate referrals.
6. Ensure audit of service at regular intervals to ensure it is meeting KPIs.
7. Facilitate outreach clinics in the spoke centres.
8. Have a working knowledge of the health information and quality Authority (HIQA) standards as they apply to the role.
9. Support, promote and actively participate in sustainable energy, water and waste initiatives to create a more sustainable, low carbon and efficient health service.
Minimum Requirements:
- Hold an Irish Medical Council number (essential and active).
- Hold an MRCP certificate or equivalent (desired).
- Have a minimum of six months registrar experience (desired).
- Have experience working with Older Persons medicine.
- Hold a driving licence and have access to their own transport for the delivery of care as per duties of Registrar in the community setting.
