2025/36 - Locum Consultant Anaesthesiologist
Job Title and Grade
Full-Time Locum Consultant Anaesthesiologist. This is a Public Only Consultant Contract 2023.

25 hour per week commitment to the Rotunda Hospital and a 12 hour per week commitment to the Mater Hospital.
Details of Service
In the Rotunda Hospital the Anaesthesiology team provides full anaesthesiology service including participation in an On-Call rota. This includes pre-operative assessment, intra/post-operative care, peri-partum obstetric care including epidural analgesia and critical care (HDU) care including interhospital patient transfer. Additional roles include administrative, academic, quality improvement and educational activities.
The Mater is a level 4 teaching hospital which provides a range of frontline and specialist services on a regional and national level, including the national centre for cardiac surgery and an Intensive Care Unit providing national Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation service. Currently there are 12 operating theatres but expansion of ophthalmology, cancer, interventional radiology and cardiology, and trauma surgical services is ongoing.
The successful applicant will be involved in the provision of anaesthesia to patients as agreed with the Master in The Rotunda Hospital and the Clinical Director in the Mater. The principal subspecialty will be obstetric anaesthesia, but will encompass all aspects of inpatient and outpatient anaesthesia services.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* To participate in development of and undertake all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant's area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer. This will focus on anaesthesia, with special emphasis on ambulatory gynaecology, and encompassing pre-assessment services.
* To deliver pre-assessment and perioperative care of high risk patients.
* To ensure that duties and functions are undertaken in a manner that minimises delays for patients and possible disruption of services.
* To work within the framework of the hospital service plan and/or levels of service (volume, types etc.) as determined by the Employer.
* To co-operate with the implementation of Managerial Procedures.
* To formally review the execution of the Clinical Directorate Service Plan with the Clinical Director / Employer periodically.
* To participate in the development and operation of the Clinical Directorate structure and in such management or representative structures as are in place or being developed.
* To provide, as appropriate, consultation in the Consultant's area of designated expertise in respect of patients of other Consultants at their request.
* To ensure in consultation with the Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is available at all times having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive as it relates to doctors in training.
* To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) treating patients under the Consultant's care.
* To participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for non-Consultant Hospital Doctors and other staff as appropriate.
* To participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures.
* The person appointed shall perform the following duties appropriate to the office: The new appointee will participate in the Anaesthesia On Call rota at the Rotunda Hospital.
Duties also include:
* Provision of Anaesthesia for patients attending for surgery or other interventions.
* Provide peri-operative care for surgical patients, which entails preoperative assessment, intra-operative care and post-operative management and follow-up for patients.
* Be involved in the pre-operative assessment clinics. Provide anaesthesia outside of theatre as requested.
* Be involved in teaching undergraduate, postgraduate and advanced fellowship levels.
* Participate in administrative and management functions as required to support the provision and development of anaesthetic services.
* Support other duties or roles as may arise which are part of the functions of the department.
Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications and/ or experience
a) Full registration in the General Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered.
and
b) The possession of the FCA or an equivalent thereto.
and
c) Inclusion on or eligibility to be included on the Register of Specialists maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland.
Demonstrate up to date knowledge of routine aspects of anaesthesia practice, with particular emphasis on obstetrical anaesthesia.
Entry to competition / recruitment process
No candidate will be appointed as a Medical Consultant unless (s)he is registered as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland.
Successful candidates must be registered as a Specialist in the relevant Specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland within 180 days of the day of interview.
Should the successful candidate not be registered as a Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate.
Health
A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character
Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
Age
Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 2004).
Other requirements specific to the post
To be available to attend emergencies within 30 minutes when on duty, either at the Rotunda or its partner hospitals as required.
Skills, competencies and/or knowledge
* Advanced (fellowship or equivalent) training in obstetric anaesthesia at the time of taking up the appointment.
* Applicants will be expected to provide clinical leadership in development of women's health services, including termination of pregnancy with responsibility for education, training, organisation, provision, and audit of services.
* Skilled in the provision of anaesthesia to high risk patients.
* Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills including awareness of resource management and importance of value for money.
* Demonstrate evidence of ability to empathise with and treat patients, relatives and colleagues with dignity and respect.
* Demonstrate evidence of ability to manage a busy theatre effectively.
* Demonstrate an ability to engage in research and clinical trials.
* Demonstrate an ability to participate fully in audit and clinical governance programme.
