Scopely is looking for a Principal Game Server Engineer focused on core server technology to join our team to work on a new, truly unique multiplayer strategy game. In this pivotal role, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of our MMO game server architecture.
What You Will Do
1. Work in a team responsible for designing, developing and maintaining backend services and APIs in Python running on AWS.
2. Work with our MMORTS game services, which support millions of daily players.
3. Plan the future of our server core technologies that will lay the foundation for exciting new gameplay features.
4. Design and implement new features in our core technologies, working collaboratively with other stakeholder teams to understand requirements and identify the best technical solutions.
5. Inspect the performance of our server clusters and propose improvements.
6. Perform deep analysis of player behaviors and how our server can be hardened to improve player experience and defend against bad actors (botters, cheaters, etc).
7. Work closely with the QA team to resolve bugs and deliver high-quality code.
8. Deploy, monitor, and manage applications in a cloud environment such as AWS.
9. Stay up-to-date with industry changes and emerging trends, especially regarding Python, Redis, AWS, and Gaming.
What We’re Looking For
1. Highly experienced in developing highly available back-end systems and servers for large-scale MMO games or high-traffic web systems.
2. Experienced with Python and its ecosystem, including familiarity with web frameworks such as Flask, Tornado, or FastAPI.
3. Familiar with the design and implementation of highly scalable, reliable, and secure systems using Redis and its ecosystem.
4. Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems and Docker containers.
5. Good understanding of how to prevent intrusions and cheating.
6. Experience in version control and familiarity with deployment methodologies and CI/CD pipelines.
7. Experience with automated testing.
8. Experience with stateful and stateless game server architectures.
Bonus Points
1. Familiarity with messaging systems such as RabbitMQ, AWS SQS, or Redis Streams.
2. Experience working with AWS services like EC2, ECR, RDS, S3, and IAM.
3. Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and experience with Terraform.
4. Understanding of network infrastructure and cloud networking concepts.
5. Experience with traffic analysis via tools like Charles proxy or Datadog.
6. Understanding of Kibana / Datadog log querying and dashboards.
