Our client, a dynamic leader in the electrical contracting and consultancy sector, is seeking a Head of Commercial and Estimating to join their Senior Leadership Team. This pivotal role oversees commercial and estimating functions, driving strategic direction, financial oversight, and project success.
Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Head of Commercial and Estimating is responsible for ensuring accurate cost estimation, aligning commercial strategies with business goals, and leading the tendering process for large-scale projects. This role demands expert knowledge in project tendering, contract management, and financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Commercial Strategy and Leadership:
* Lead and develop commercial and estimating teams to foster excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
* Implement commercial strategies to achieve profitability and business growth.
* Provide guidance on contract negotiations, risk management, and financial forecasting.
* Review and approve tenders, budgets, and estimates in line with company standards.
Estimating and Cost Management:
* Oversee accurate cost estimation for projects, ensuring competitive pricing.
* Manage bid preparation and submission, maintaining profitability.
* Collaborate with project teams to assess requirements and prepare cost breakdowns.
* Continuously improve estimating processes through post-project cost analysis.
Tender and Bid Management:
* Supervise the creation of compliant and competitive tender documentation.
* Liaise with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers for accurate pricing and project data.
* Participate in client presentations to secure contracts.
Contract Management:
* Review and negotiate contracts to align with business objectives.
* Oversee contract administration and financial monitoring throughout project lifecycles.
* Provide expertise on claims, variations, and dispute resolution.
Financial Reporting and Forecasting:
* Lead financial forecasting and reporting to ensure alignment with targets.
* Monitor project performance, identifying and addressing financial variances.
* Compile and negotiate interim payment claims and final accounts to maximize cash flow.
Stakeholder and Relationship Management:
* Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
* Foster collaboration between internal departments to ensure project success.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
* Level 8 degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering, Construction Law, or related fields.
* A Master’s qualification is highly desirable.
Experience:
* Minimum 15 years in the construction industry, with 10+ years in senior management.
* Proven expertise in tendering, estimating, and cost management for large projects.
* Strong leadership and team management experience.
* Experience in public lighting, civil engineering, or utilities sectors is advantageous.
Skills & Competencies:
* Advanced knowledge of estimating software and contract law.
* Proficient in MS Office for data analysis and financial forecasting.
* Strong negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
* Excellent communication and leadership skills.
* Commercially and contractually aware, with strong time management and reporting skills.
