Role Overview
The Packaging Technologist will play a critical role in supporting the company’s corrugated packaging operations. They will be responsible for creating and approving inbound keylines and co ordinating artwork approval and signoff, as well as acting as a repository of knowledge for the sales team.
Collaborating with customers and suppliers, and ensuring the technical accuracy of packaging solutions, the ideal candidate will be a good communicator with a strong understanding of corrugated board specifications, FEFCO styles, design software (Artios CAD or equivalent) and industry standards, as well as a commitment to delivering excellent service and results.
Key Responsibilities
1.Keyline Generation/ Development, Artwork signoff and approval
* Create and approve keylines for Corrugated and FBB packaging based on customer requirements.
* Draw precision keylines based off provided examples.
* Identify board compositions and print types.
* Review and approve artwork and technical specifications to ensure customer satisfaction.
* Co ordinate sample production and delivery to customers for approval.
2.Customer, Team, and Supplier Liaison
* Act as the primary technical contact for the Limerick team and for customers, providing expert advice on packaging solutions.
* Work with Procurement department to determine optimal sourcing for products based on the needs of the customer.
* Collaborate with suppliers to ensure materials meet required specifications and quality standards.
3.Quality Control and Testing
* Evaluate the structural performance of packaging solutions, including testing and material specifications (e.g., ECT ratings, flute types).
* Assist the Quality manager by acting as an SME where required.
4.Technical Expertise and Innovation
* Offer insights on packaging designs to optimize for cost-effectiveness, durability, and sustainability.
* Knowledgeable in testing metrics for corrugated packaging (e.g. BCT, ECT, Mullen Burst, Drop Test, Cobb Test, Safety Factors, Etc. )
* Keep abreast of industry trends and developments in corrugated packaging.
5.Process Improvement
* Identify opportunities for process improvements within packaging workflows and contribute to operational efficiency.
* Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges with packaging designs or production processes.
6.Documentation and Reporting
* Maintain accurate records of projects, keylines, and specifications.
* Provide technical reports and summaries to stakeholders as needed.
Key Skills and Qualifications
* Experience: 5+ years in corrugated packaging, with a strong focus on technical expertise and knowledge of manufacturing processes.
* Education: Relevant degree or diploma in Packaging Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
* Technical Knowledge:
* Proficiency in FEFCO styles, board grades, printing processes, and flute types.
* Strong understanding of substrates such as clay-coated and kraft liners, as well as moisture resistance considerations.
* Software Skills: Proficiency in CAD software and design tools used in packaging development. Adobe suite, Microsoft suite.
* Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for liaising with customers and suppliers.
* Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy when reviewing artwork, keylines, and specifications.
* Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and provide solutions to complex technical challenges.
