Northway Co-op wishes to employ a full-time horticultural research technician to work on their mushroom farms. Northway Co-op is a EU Recognised Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organisation, based in Monaghan.
About the role
This is an exciting role, carrying out Research and Development projects on their members’ farms. The Research technician will work on mushroom farms on this project, and if time is available, on other Producer Organisation Research Projects and other Farm Research Projects.
Location: Mushroom Farm(s)
Salary: Equivalent to Technician Grade 1 with a Salary Scale of €31,135 to €41,538.
Responsibilities
* Support in conducting productivity and agronomic evaluation of growth media through commercial-like trials. This will involve ordering growing materials, working with supervisor staff to ensure correctly installed crops, monitoring crops for performance, and harvesting and recording harvest, packing, and yield metrics.
* Maintenance of yield and laboratory data on server.
* Assisting in the coordination of growing media and constituent sourcing, storage, and preparation for field and laboratory analysis.
* Conducting routine monitoring of plant and mushroom performance.
* Ensuring necessary Knowledge transfer information, such as photographs, is maintained as well as assisting with stakeholder engagement events.
* Health & Safety Coordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety Duties as may be assigned from time to time.
* Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Required skills
* Candidates must have a Level 6 in Horticulture, Soil Science, Agronomy, Botany, Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, or a related discipline, or 5 years of industry experience with relevant training.
* People and resource management skills.
* Data handling and computer skills.
* Experience of Research methodologies and Data analysis.
* Candidates should have a working knowledge of crop production methods (essential).
* Candidates should have experience of growing horticultural or other crops (preferred).
* A Level 7 qualification in Soil Science &/or Agri-Engineering would be a distinct advantage.
* Basic laboratory skills.
* Experience of conducting basic analysis independently.
* Experience with multiple different horticultural growing systems, including mushroom production.
* Experience of conducting independent analysis on data.
* Ability to work as part of a team, including consulting, collaborating, and building relationships with key partners.
* Has the ability to problem solve and demonstrates a high level of attention to detail.
* Demonstrates a positive approach to new challenges and dissemination of new tasks.
Other
* As this role will involve driving vehicles, the candidate must be able to drive a car unaccompanied on both Irish and Northern Ireland public roads.
* As this is a Research role, working time flexibility is required to ensure that research work is carried out and monitored.
* Travel within Ireland will be required.
* Travel to other countries.
