Position Description
Applications are invited for HV Substation Designers. There are multiple positions available in both the Northern & Southern Regions covering the following discipline.
1. HV Substation Design for 38kV, 20kV and 10kV operating voltages
The HV Stations Designer is responsible for providing safe HV Stations designs within their region. These designs will be packaged and used by ESB staff and/or contractors to carry out work safely and efficiently on the Electricity Network. The designs shall be carried out in line with relevant standards set down by ESB Network Assets and adhere to company standards. These designs may be for work related to internal, commercial, industrial or customer projects as well as ESB’s own work programmes, and will include all aspects of electrical and physical design for substation equipment up to 38kV. Work within higher voltage stations with 38kV interfaces will be a feature as will interaction and coordination with designers at other voltage levels.
All design work is required to be completed in a timely manner and in line with the ESB Design Standards & Guidelines and ensuring that ESB Networks Customer Charter standards are adhered to. The role includes managing your own design workload. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on his/her own initiative but also as part of a larger design team and will be required to follow schedules set down by their design manager.
Key Responsibilities
2. Design of full station projects for both existing and greenfield sites
3. Maintaining an excellent knowledge of HV and/or MV Electrical Stations design and design tools.
4. Preparing high quality Electrical and Physical designs including use CAD/CAE systems
5. Preparing scope documents, calculating costs; preparing capital approvals, authorisations, and protection settings requests, and safety documentation.
6. Survey / inspection and measurement work within live stations, including safe use of all associated measurement tools and systems.
7. Perform factory acceptance testing of control and protection panels
8. Support installers and commissioners with design queries and issues during pre-commissioning and commissioning.
9. Recording and updating as-built records, Asset Registers and Network Maps.
10. Maintaining commercial focus by preparing least cost technically acceptable designs
11. Design Major Projects as part of the Capital Delivery Program
12. Compliance with H&S Legislation
13. Compliance with Environmental Legislation
14. Fulfil the role of Designer under the Construction Regulations
15. Inspection and recording duties as required
16. Following ESB’s Code of Ethics “Our Code”
17. Providing support in the planning and execution of construction and maintenance work programmes as required
18. Manage design workload as agreed with the relevant Design Manager
19. Use of IT systems such as IWM, EPlan, FMIS, Excel etc
20. Delivering an excellent customer service to internal and external customers
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
21. Knowledge of Utility AIS/GIS HV Substation plant; including, Transformers, Circuit Breakers, Control & Protection and Metering
22. Ability to translate scope and policy requirements into constructable designs
23. Ability to Implement standards and policies to ensure optimum design
24. Minimum of 3 years relevant experience
Desirable
25. Knowledge of ESB IT systems
26. Ability to operate in 2D and 3D CAD/BIM environments
27. Project Management skills
28. Apply Quality Management standards in ESB Networks
Qualifications
Essential
Either 3rd Level qualification or equivalent design work experience
Desirable
A QQI advanced level 6 Electrical Trade Certificate or equivalent which is recognised by SOLAS.
