Salary: Appointment will be made on Staff Nurse grade at a point in line with Government pay policy.
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week

Responsibilities
As a Neuroscience Staff Nurse at Beaumont Hospital, you will play a pivotal role in the delivery of safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care for a caseload of patients during your rostered shifts. This will include assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care using systematic nursing models of care delivery such as the Roper, Logan and Tierney Activities of Daily Living. You are expected to adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as well as Beaumont Hospital policies, procedures and guidelines. You will be accountable to the Clinical Nurse Manager 2 and, in their absence, to the delegated nurse holding shift responsibility for the ward. An interest in teaching student nurses to function independently is also a prerequisite. Overall, your responsibilities may be divided into clinical, professional, managerial and educational categories.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. The promotion of evidence-based practice in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures.
2. To develop clinical expertise, leadership and teaching skills through nursing practice.
3. To share responsibility with the nursing team for the management of nursing care and the patients' environment under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
4. To maintain a high standard of professional and ethical responsibility.
5. To provide and maintain effective, individualised nursing care by:
1. Assessing (with the patients where possible) physical, psychological and social problems and the need for nursing intervention.
2. Preparing and updating the nurse care plans within a nursing framework to include treatment delegated by medical staff or other specialist teams.
3. Assisting the medical staff in their treatment of patients through the coordination of care and treatments provided by other disciplines and integrating these into the care plan.
4. Upon completion of local training programmes and evaluation of nurse competencies, the expectation will be to independently deliver skilled nursing care and treatments for a caseload of patients.
5. Planning the involvement of the patient’s relatives, teaching, and supervising nursing techniques in preparation for the transfer home.
6. Utilising assessment skills and techniques to determine patient needs on admission.
7. Completing and documenting the nursing admission assessment accurately and timely.
8. Assessing patient condition on an ongoing basis and continually adapting plan of care to meet patients’ needs.
9. Assessing the need for patient/family instruction.
10. Developing and documenting a plan of care based on patient needs.
11. Developing patient teaching and discharge plans as necessary.
12. Collaborating with, escalating to, and initiating referrals to other multi-disciplinary team members in planning, assessing, evaluating, and implementing care.
Implementation:
1. Provides safe, comprehensive nursing care to a caseload of patients/service users and within the guidelines laid out by NMBI.
2. Is familiar with and practices according to established legal requirements, policy, and procedures.
3. Establishes care priorities based on nursing, medical, and other clinical, social, psychological patient problems.
4. Performs procedures accurately, completely and safely.
5. Maintains a safe environment for patients, service users, relatives, and visitors.
6. Respects the dignity and confidentiality of patients, serving as an advocate as necessary.
7. Is familiar with role and functions quickly and effectively in an emergency situation, e.g., Cardiac arrest, Fire, Major Incident.
8. Adapts to changing workload.
9. Manages, responds to, and reports ward incidents and accidents in accordance with hospital policy.
10. Contributes to nursing quality assurance by assisting in the identification of recurrent nursing problems and cooperating in data collection.
Communication Skills:
1. Documents according to policy and procedure.
2. Reports verbally and in writing pertinent patient care information to appropriate nursing, medical, and allied health personnel.
3. Communicates appropriately with patients/relatives and colleagues and other members of the healthcare team.
4. Acknowledges limitations and requests assistance where necessary.
Professional:
1. Supports the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the nursing department and hospital.
2. Follows appropriate lines of authority by discussing issues firstly with Clinical Nurse Manager, then with Unit Nurse Manager, and then with the Director of Nursing.
3. Demonstrates flexibility by assisting in other areas of the Hospital as needed.
4. Always works within Scope of Practice as per NMBI guidelines.
5. Engages with, supports, and completes required tasks to ensure that care delivery is of the highest standard through audit, benchmarking, and collaboration with other healthcare team members.
Management:
1. Demonstrates ability to organise care for caseload of patients.
2. Uses time effectively.
3. Shows ability to delegate work to student nurses, healthcare assistants, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.
4. Uses discretion for decision making regarding patient care.
5. Displays initiative.
6. Reports ongoing problems to Clinical Nurse Manager / designated Nurse in charge.
Education:
1. Demonstrates ability to teach and guide more Junior Staff/ Students /Healthcare Assistants.
2. Actively participates in ongoing education/Post Graduate Education/Self Development.
3. Attends relevant mandatory training sessions, Study Days, and other developmental learning events as required by the staff nurse post and the specialty.
4. Ensures all mandatory training is kept up to date.
Qualifications
Mandatory:
1. The post holder must be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses kept by An Bord Altranais (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland).
2. The post holder must have at least 4 years previous or current registered nurse experience working in a neurosciences setting.
3. The post holder must hold valid and unrestricted permission to work in the Republic of Ireland.
