Summary of Post
A Research Ireland Accelerating Research to Commercialisation (ARC) funded post-doctoral position is available in the Apjohn Laboratory, in the Chemistry Department of RCSI working under the supervision of Dr. Darren Griffith. Your primary role will be the synthesis and purification of bioactive organic ligands in high purity and the corresponding metal complexes. Candidates should therefore be proficient in organic synthesis and purification of organic molecules. You will be working on a medicinal inorganic chemistry project. The primary goal of this project is the development of a library of patentable metal-based antimicrobial complexes for pulmonary delivery.
This is a full-time position, funded initially for up to 15 months with the potential for an additional 3 months, extending the contract to 18 months.
Specifically, the duties of the post are:
1. Synthesis of bioactive ligands and metal complexes in high purity
2. Upskill in intellectual property (IP) regulations and best practices
3. Conduct comprehensive patent searches to assess existing intellectual property
4. Contribute to the drafting of high-quality patent applications, and actively contribute to the filing process
5. Supervision of undergraduate students
6. Coordinate and manage a data management plan
7. Support general lab setup as required
8. Support the preparation of scientific reports, publications and presentations as required
9. Presentation of records and results at meetings (internal and external) and during audits
10. Order and maintain stock of reagents
11. Other such duties as may be assigned from time to time
12. Complying with statutory legislation and Department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
13. Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
14. Representing the best interests of the Department/College at all times
Qualifications/Experience - (Essential):
1. A PhD degree in chemistry with significant experience in organic synthesis and purification
Knowledge & Experience - (Desirable):
1. An individual with previous experience in organic synthesis and purification
2. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
3. Excellent time-management and organisational skills
4. Attention to detail and thoroughness in work practices and an ability to work to deadlines
5. A capacity to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team as well as independently, in a non-structured environment
6. Experience with IP protection
