South East Technological University is seeking to establish a Grade III (Library Assistant I) panel. Applications are invited from eligible candidates from which a Grade III Library Assistant panel will be formed to address future requirements. Short-listing will be applied in advance of interviews. As vacancies arise, they may be filled from the panel of suitably qualified candidates. These vacancies may be part-time, temporary, fixed contract or permanent. A member of the library team, the role holder will contribute to the mission and operation of the library in providing quality information resources, services, supports, resources and facilities to the University community.
The Library Assistant I will be required to assist in the pro-active, cost effective and efficient delivery of library services. The appointee may be assigned to any of a wide range of grade appropriate activities carried out in a University Library, in any of its campuses. The appointee will be expected to demonstrate a strong customer service approach, excellent inter-personal and communications skills, flexibility, initiative and an understanding/keen interest of how library services operate within the context of a higher education academic environment.
Key responsibilities
The principal duties will include but are not restricted to:
1. Library user focus, front-facing activities with all types of library user.
2. Directly involved in the day to day functioning of the circulation desk.
3. Assist library users or other library staff with information queries, by telephone, online, email or in person.
4. Customer Care - conscientious in following up on queries and tasks.
5. Assisting library users with information queries.
6. Shelving and maintaining library stock and collections.
7. Assisting with collection management including regular stock repair, binding and donations.
8. Assisting in the preparation and arranging of library displays and exhibitions.
9. Promoting the work of the library via social media and library website.
10. Assisting in the delivery of library induction, tours, library initiatives and programmes to all members of the Institute community as required.
11. Implementing library rules, policy and regulations to facilitate the appropriate and efficient use of library resources by students and staff.
12. To participate in library training and continuous professional development as required.
13. Participating in out of term and specific summer library projects as assigned.
14. Provide an excellent library service to all library users in a courteous and respectful manner at all times.
15. All posts in the library require a good knowledge and skill in the use of ICT - the successful candidate will be expected to use new technologies as they arise. Training will be provided as necessary and this will include extensive use of the Library Management System and other library systems.
16. Providing regular updates to the relevant library manager(s).
17. To undertake other duties as may be defined by the Head of Library & Information Services.
