Purpose of the role
The DevOps Center of Excellence (DevOps COE) is tasked with delivering automated processes and tooling to streamline how The bank delivers software. We have already deployed key systems to facilitate this, and lead by example by ensuring our tools and services are delivered using fully automated pipelines.
As a Contract DevOps Engineer within our DevOps COE, you could be working in one of the following areas as needed:
1. A member of our platform development team, creating new automated processes and tools with the DevOps COE and using your experience with working development teams to ensure their requirements are met and they have a clear migration path to our new infrastructure.
2. Supporting application development teams via our enablement squads to ensure our platform is fit for purpose, and developing the pipelines that streamlines application delivery within the bank
3. Working with our Architecture and Design teams ensuring all our services are compliant to bank policy and leverage the most from the tooling we're deploying
Key Responsibilities
You will be a strong, technical & proactive engineer who will be responsible for:
4. Work with the DevOps COE to deliver key technical solutions to the bank in a way that is easily consumable by our development teams
5. Have an excellent understanding of the environments currently in use by the development teams and provide support to them in their day-to-day usage
6. You understand Infrastructure as Code principles (IaC) and are comfortable developing code to deliver working products (environment + applications + configuration) for the bank
7. Use this understanding to continually improve our Infrastructure as Code components (Terraform / Ansible) and ensure thorough testing
8. Work closely with Security and IT Architects to ensure all solutions are compliant to bank policy and are properly introduced to the bank
9. Understand & Influence how development teams are building and testing their software. Take best in practice guidelines and help them move to newer solutions that the DevOps COE is delivering
What is the Opportunity
A hands-on, contract role to deliver best in class DevOps processes within the bank. This is a hybrid role, requiring attendance at our offices in Baggot Plaza, Dublin, 2 - 3 days a week (Tues - Thursday typically).
Essential Qualifications
3rd level degree in a similar discipline
Essential Skills and Experience
10. A minimum of 5 years' experience in either a software development role where you have some exposure to releasing applications into a production environment or an operational facing role where you've had to deploy and support production type workloads
11. Demonstrate good critical thinking skills and able to work with evolving requirements as projects discover their exact needs
12. Good communication skills and comfortable with Email, Skype & MS Teams
13. Experience using the Atlassian tool stack - Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket
If you've done software development, we would look for:
14. Good skills in one of the main scripting languages such as python, perl, ruby and their test frameworks
15. Strong development background in languages such as Java, Golang, C, C# and a good understanding of their test frameworks
16. You have developed applications that have involved the delivery and consumption of API's
17. Exposure to one or more cloud providers (AWS / Azure / GCP) and you're comfortable with how to provision infrastructure using the portal UI.
18. You're aware of tools like Ansible / Puppet / Chef and what they do, and it would be great if you had some hands-on experience
19. You've seen Terraform code and would be comfortable in how it is executed and debugged
20. Exposure to Docker and orchestration environments such as Kubernetes / OpenShift
If you've been more involved in the operational side of things, we like to see something like the following:
21. In depth experience of one or more of the cloud providers (AWS / Azure / GCP) and can automate infrastructure using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM Templates etc. Certifications are nice, but hands on experience preferable.
22. A thorough understanding of how infrastructure is managed and provisioned in virtualized environments such as VMWare
23. You've used configuration management tools like Ansible / Puppet / Chef in anger
24. In depth experience of configuration management orchestration tools such as Ansible Tower / Chef Server
25. Thorough understanding of SSL & Cryptography and solutions to automation and management of SSL Certificates for applications
26. An appreciation for a test first software development approach, and a desire to ensure there's no surprises at deployment time
