Assistant Lecturer – Work Placement Coordination
(for students with intellectual disability) (Kerry Campuses)
This position may be filled in the academic year 2024/2025 on a fixed term basis in accordance with the requirements of the Technological Universities Act 2018.
Overview:
This post relates to coordination of student preparation and participation, implementation of student assessment and review, and related duties associated with the work placement component of the Certificate in Personal and Professional Development for Employability and Further Studies. This Certificate programme is specifically designed for students with intellectual disability. The programme is a pilot project funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) under its PATH 4, Phase 2 scheme.
The objective of this pilot project (Jan 2025 to June 2026) is to enhance course provision for students with intellectual disabilities at MTU. The pilot will support future evidence-informed policy considerations in respect of the successful participation of students with intellectual disabilities in higher education.
The pilot at MTU will have 10 places for students with an intellectual disability.
1. Minimum qualifications for appointment to the post on a permanent or contract basis:
1. Appropriate honours primary degree (second class or higher) in disciplines such as Education, Social Sciences, Social Care, Humanities, Community Development, Science/Veterinary Nursing or equivalent.
2. Three years relevant post-graduate experience, i.e., three years relevant experience having gained the qualifications at 1(a) above.
Desirable:
* Experience of developing support plans for students with intellectual disability.
* Support for students with learning needs in 1:1, group, and work placement settings.
* Career guidance and planning job matching with students' aptitudes.
* Support for students to develop job search skills, interview techniques, work behaviour skills, and work communications skills.
* Support for students transitioning into work placements.
And
* Appropriate post-graduate qualification (Masters; PhD) in an area relevant to the nature of this position.
* Evidence of prior interest in enhancing inclusive educational experiences.
* Evidence of working with employment-related legislation and disability rights.
2. Duties:
The Assistant Lecturer will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment, and academic administration. The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned by management including but not limited to:
1. Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by management of the university, day or evening, up to 630 hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate.
2. Carrying out assessment, monitoring, and evaluation of examinations work and providing academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities.
3. Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development.
4. Engaging in research, consultancy, and development work as appropriate.
5. Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management.
6. Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management.
7. Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate.
8. Participating in development, implementation, and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements.
9. Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their department/school and the University.
10. Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work.
The appointee shall carry out the lawful instructions of the President or Authorized Officer and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week.
3. Salary:
The salary scale as at 01/10/2024 for an Assistant Lecturer per annum is:
€45,140 - €61,254
4. Progression:
Assistant Lecturers will progress to the grade of Lecturer on completion of one year’s service after having reached the maximum of the Assistant Lecturer scale subject to a minimum of five years’ continuous service having regard to ability, experience, academic qualifications, scholarship, and demonstrated performance.
Possession of an appropriate defined postgraduate qualification or equivalent shall normally be considered an essential requirement.
Universities may award incremental credit for previous service in the Assistant Lecturer grade in another Institute or University. The University may require five years service in the University before progression is considered. An Assistant Lecturer with a Ph.D. and relevant research experience may be considered for progression after three years continuous service. If successful such an Assistant Lecturer may be placed on the first point of the lecturer scale and remain on that point until five years service has been established or a vacancy at Lecturer level has occurred.
5. Citizenship Requirement:
Candidates should note that eligibility to compete for posts is open to citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) or to non-EEA nationals with a valid work permit. The EEA consists of the Member States of the European Union, United Kingdom along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. Swiss citizens under EU agreements may also apply.
It is an offence under the Employment Permits Acts 2003 and 2006 for both an employer and an employee if a non-EEA National is in employment without an appropriate employment permit. Employment permit holders can only work for the employer named on the permit.
