Job Description
The primary role of the Commercial Project Manager is to manage a focused team of commercial analysts to efficiently and speedily derive key techno-economic data to facilitate key business decisions.
Facilitation of iterative commercial cycles based on technical and market information will be central to this role. The CPM will report into the Chief Commercial Officer and work closely with the wider commercial team (Commercial Development Manager, Corporate Finance Manager and Legal Counsel) and the technical team.
The CPM will bring a strong technical/engineering knowledge base and combine it with commercial acumen. Key to this role is understanding the technology to a sufficient degree, identifying the commercial crossover and targeting key elements which influence the commercial viability of the technology.
Key Responsibilities
The CPM will ultimately drive and coordinate a team of commercial analysts to achieve a programme built upon the business' KPIs and strategic milestones. Directly coordinating a dedicated techno-commercial team of analysts, and in parallel maintaining a close working relationship with the technical team with respect to latest product designs. Ultimately the CPM and the techno-commercial team will derive robust and timely data to inform business decisions. In the context of coordination and team management, the following areas of responsibility will fall to the CPM.
1. Commercial Model Ownership - driving the direction of the team and the tools used to derive commercial data and market position.Overall Commercial model structure consisting of the Product Cost Basis Calculator, Competitive Analysis Tool, Market Size Analysis and Revenue Forecasting tool.Working closely with the Corporate Finance Manager to agree appropriate direction and decisions to continually improve the commercial model.
2. Conducting and directing market research into identified areas of value for the business. This will be driven by internal and external resources (via consultants). Areas of focus will include:Competitor technologies e.g., incumbent cable designsFacilitating technologies e.g., electrical OEMsSupply chain e.g., subsystems and component suppliersNational and international market developments and changing market landscapes
3. Demonstration and Technology Development - Achieving TRLs of 5, 6, 7 and 8 will require increasingly more challenging and costly demonstration projects. Planning of said demonstrations will be key and commercial arrangements must be developed with a variety of partners. Multiple disciplines within the business will contribute, however mapping out the key agreement dates and requirements will be a key responsibility.
4. IP - Working closely with IP analysts, legal counsel, and technical teams. Developing an understanding of competitive position because of IP development, acquisition, or deficiencies. Using this information to drive team objectives and areas of focus.
5. Grant funding proposal coordination - Will apply for grant funding through various national and European funding mechanisms. The CPM will coordinate the drafting of the proposals, liaise with consortium members, coordinate sign off decisions and work with the Chief Public Affairs Officer. The CPM will also stay up to date with latest developments in the funding landscape.
6. Presentation and clear communication of information across all the aforementioned areas is key with audiences consisting of the executive team and board members.
7. Supporting with KPI and milestone definition year on year.
8. Management of external consultants - developing the case for external support where required, developing tender documents, coordinating tender competitions, tender scoring and assessment, consultant management throughout engagements, ensuring outputs are tailored to internal requirements.
9. Managing budgets related primarily to external service providers.
10. Line management - Ongoing direction and support to the team, hiring of additional team members, regular catch ups with team members to ensure they are content in their role, heading off any issues in a timely fashion, formal periodic reviews.
Experience and Skills
11. Ability to converse with Engineers on technical subjects, a bachelor's degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience would be advantageous.
12. Ability to flex between detailed engineering discussion (designs, documentation, imagery), commercial strategy and macro policy impacting our market(s).
13. Desirable - experience working with research institutions, novel technologies and/or OEMs in the energy sector.
14. Experience in offshore infrastructure industries, the electrical transmission market, regulation, infrastructure consenting and transboundary assets; would be beneficial.
15. Excellent communication ability with an audience-centric approach to communication design (i.e., ability to communicate technical content to both technical and non-technical audiences)
