Bat Conservation Ireland is an independent, non-profit charity that is Ireland’s leading authority on bats. We conduct monitoring and research to increase knowledge of all Irish bat species and work to secure and expand existing bat populations, and where feasible, to extend their ranges. We aim to develop a genuine and widespread understanding and appreciation of bats amongst the public, state agencies, and other organizations, and to secure consistent protection of all bat species and the ecological infrastructure necessary to support them.

The Role
Bat Conservation Ireland is looking for a suitable person with financial management experience to join our governing Council. This is a voluntary position, and the appropriate person would be involved in reviewing annual budgets, quarterly accounts, project budgets (if required), and being part of the annual audit process in an oversight capacity. Day-to-day finances are managed by a financial administrator, so this role would be in an oversight capacity.
Additionally, the appointee would need to review the organization’s financial policies and procedures and ensure that best practices are being followed. The appointee would be required to Chair and convene the audit sub-committee, which would meet 4 times per year.
As the organization does not have a physical office, the appointee would need to be comfortable liaising effectively with Council members, staff, and external contractors across a digital landscape.
An understanding of governance for charities would be highly desirable, particularly in relation to financial governance obligations, and an ability to communicate financial information for those who do not have a background in this area would be required.
On average, it would be anticipated that the appointee would be required to give approximately 4 hours per month, including preparing for and attending Council Meetings (approx. 6 per year, remotely, as well as the AGM, in-person) and Sub-Committee Meetings (4 per year, remotely), although additional time may be needed at key times during the year.
