Photo Museum Ireland are seeking a new voluntary director with proven knowledge in Capital Planning and Development, Real Estate, Building Regulations, Sustainable Development or Engineering expertise to join our charity. The successful candidate would be required to carry out the normal duties associated with being a board member in line with the Charity Governance Code and the Photo Museum Ireland board handbook and will provide input to the overall decision-making process of the working board.

Photo Museum Ireland is a registered charity with a CLG company structure. We are kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Dublin City Council, Creative Ireland and other funding agencies as well as through self-generated funds and philanthropy. Photo Museum Ireland is the leading voice for photography in Ireland. We are dedicated to fostering a dynamic culture of photographic practice across a broad range of platforms. Established as ‘The Gallery of Photography’ in 1978 by John Osman, the organisation has grown to become one of Ireland’s most loved arts organisations. On 22 June 2022, we marked an important step in our development, changing our name to Photo Museum Ireland. Our programme of free exhibitions showcases the best of contemporary Irish and international photography. We provide sustained support for artists across the span of their careers and development programmes to bring their work to audiences nationally and internationally. We encourage critical thinking and discussion on photography across our in-house, outreach and online channels- bringing arts experiences to all.
Photo Museum Ireland is seeking to relocate to establish Ireland’s first world-standard space for contemporary photography. This will create a major new cultural attraction to showcase contemporary photography to international standards.
Responsibilities will include the following:
* To contribute to the development and implementation of the charity’s strategic plan, particularly in areas related to physical infrastructure, building projects, and spatial planning.
* To provide professional advice on architectural design, capital development planning, or engineering to support the charity’s projects and initiatives.
* To review and advise on project proposals, feasibility studies, and technical reports, ensuring alignment with the charity’s mission and regulatory requirements.
* To identify and assess potential risks associated with the charity’s physical and spatial initiatives, including environmental impacts, structural integrity, and long-term maintenance requirements.
* To provide guidance on budget planning and cost management for construction and renovation projects.
* To be an authorised signatory of the organisation.
* To sit on the Finance, Audit, Risk and Governance committee.
* To actively participate in board meetings, providing legal insights and contributing to discussions on governance, strategy, and operations.
* To fulfil all duties and responsibilities of a charity trustee, acting in the best interests of the charity at all times.
Desirable skills:
* Proven experience and qualifications in architecture, planning, or engineering, with a strong understanding of the principles and practices in your field.
* Experience in managing complex construction, renovation, or infrastructure projects from inception to completion.
* Familiarity with planning laws, building regulations, health and safety standards, and environmental requirements in Ireland.
* Experience in navigating the planning permission process and engaging with regulatory bodies.
* A genuine interest in and commitment to the charitable goals and mission of the organisation.
* Have the time and the commitment to fulfil the role.
* Previous experience serving on a board of directors or as a charity trustee, particularly within the nonprofit sector, would be an advantage.
* Have a desire to implement the highest standards of governance.
* Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with other board members and staff.
Board Meetings:
There will be 4-6 board meetings and 3 sub-committee meetings a year.
Meetings are a combination of online and in person and take around 2 hours during the day.
Support and Training
All new board members are offered a formal induction and provided with access to all relevant policies, procedures, financial data and the board handbook. The Chair of the board and other board members will be available for support and advice.
Remuneration
The position is unremunerated, but vouched expenses can be claimed.
