BackgroundThe Native Woodland Trust (NWT) is an environmental non-government organisation (eNGO) charity founded in 1998. (Company No. 298277, CHY14025, CRA20045265)The Native Woodland Trust is dedicated to the preservation of Ireland’s few remaining native woodlands and to the re-creation of those woodlands where they should naturally occur.In furtherance of those aims, the NWT currently manages 12 woodland nature reserves, protecting ancient woodland as well as numerous other habitats and species, as well as three native tree nurseries.The Trust also runs a number of other initiatives, including countrywide giveaways of native trees (with over 200,000 trees donated to schools and community groups), a programme to restore disease resistant Elm trees, citizen science programmes, and publicly accessible conservation events every week.The Trust has an establishment of 3 full-time staff and a network of branches and volunteers.Director role (Governance)The Trust is seeking a director to assist in providing independent expertise and oversight of the organisation’s compliance with various governance and policy requirements. The Trust aims to exceed minimum standards at all times and to adhere to the highest standard possible across our central operations and local organisations.The board meets monthly for between 1-2 hours. The full board also attends the yearly AGM. Additional time commitments may be necessary in between board meetings, to assist in preparation of reporting and actioning outputs.Preferred skills & experiencePrevious experience in corporate governance or compliance within a regulated organisation.Understanding of Charities Governance Code and Fundraising or willingness to learn and become the owner within the Trust.Ability to work with Finance Director to establish robust financial controls and processes, covering everything from expenses to cash management.Integrity to volunteer in line with the mission and values of the organisation.Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.Ability to see different perspectives, considering all information in decision making.Commitment to the highest levels of corporate governance.A passion for environmental protection; experience within environmental NGOs is beneficial.Experience in project management, and/or volunteer engagement is beneficial.Time commitmentsThere are 8 board meetings per year, all held online and last for approximately 90 minutes.There is one AGM per year, which may be in person, combined with a nature event.There is one in-person strategy event per year, which usually takes two days.There may be additional sub-committee meetings, depending on the business need.Estimated monthly time commitment is 5-10 hours, plus board and committee meetings.Before applying, please be familiar with the legal responsibilities of a Charity Trustee, which is available on the Charities Regulator website.
