Purpose of role: The new model of care will deliver on the vision of the National Model of Care for Paediatric Healthcare Services (2016), for the delivery of safe and appropriate care to paediatric patients as close to home as possible so that children and young people with urgent care needs get the right advice at the right place, first time.
CHI at Connolly, is the newest unit and as a standalone facility has a requirement for highly skilled supervising consultant presence to ensure a high level of patient safety.
The unit is purpose built for Paediatrics and is supported by Skilled Paediatric Nursing and Health and Social Care professionals.
This is a replacement post which is vital to maintain current service levels.
Currently the waiting list for an outpatient cardiology appointment is over 18 month.
This consultant post appointment assists in enabling our programme to meet the very high volume of demand for outpatient review and to advance the training and appointment of the new role of Paediatrician with a special interest in Paediatric Cardiology which is key to resolving unacceptable OPD access issues.
Similarly, the inpatient activity for cardiac interventions, pre and post operative imaging and surveillance and investigations increase annually in line with our All Island Congenital Herat Disease remit and with the high quality standards required to continue to deliver safe and appropriate patient care.
Congenital heart disease (CHD constitutes the bulk of the paediatric cardiac workload.
Currently 8 / 1,000 babies born in RoI and NI will be born with some form of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).
This translates to 570 in RoI and 200 – 250 births in NI each year.
Forecasts on growth in population are undertaken by the Central Statistics Office in ROI and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Authority (NISRA).
The projections are trend-based, making assumptions about future fertility, mortality and migration levels based on trends in recent estimates.
Growth rate in population under 16 in RoI over the next 2 years is expected to fall from 1.0% in 2016 to 0.1% in 2020.
The rate in NI is anticipated to increase from 0.5% to 0.8% and remain static until 2020.
Improved survival of infants and children with Congenital Heart Disease has resulted in a very significant population of young adults who have undergone childhood treatment for Congenital Heart Disease and who require life-long surveillance of their cardiovascular system.
At present, much of the inpatient and outpatient care of this population is provided by members of the Paediatric Cardiology group, many of whom, have a joint paediatric and adult congenital commitment.
