This post is located in Cork University Hospital (CUH) which is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland; it is the only level 1 trauma centre in the Republic of Ireland and is one of the country's eight regional cancer units.
The Laboratory provides analysis of patient specimens for inpatient, outpatient and community patients.
It also provides some referral services for specialised testing for other laboratories in the organisational area.
The service also has extensive interest in research and development and is a teaching site for Medical Scientists and related health professionals
The service has been awarded ISO15189:2022 accreditation.
It operates a Quality Management System that conforms to this standard.
The overall purpose of this post is to: · Provide strategic, clinical and scientific leadership, which results in the delivery of an accredited, effective, efficient, quality assured and patient centred Pathology service.
· Maintain administrative responsibility for the delivery of services in the Pathology laboratory in conjunction with the existing Chief Medical Scientist
· Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation among all staff in the planning and development of the service.
· Keep the Laboratory Manager and Pathology team appraised of any significant development within his/her area of responsibility and perform such additional duties as may be agreed from time to time.
The Chief Medical Scientist (Pathology) is a key member of the Laboratory Medicine management team and together with the Clinical Director will ensure that laboratory services are provided to support the clinical needs of the patients, in a manner that is consistent with the mission, values and strategic plan of the Hospital.
