Job Description
Duration: Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 12 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.
Basic Function: The successful candidate will design and carry out the daily tasks in a series of Irish case farms (dairy, pig and poultry) as part of the EU project NUTRITIVE. The candidate will organise their own schedule to contact farmers, visit farms, collect samples and organise the logistics of samples and results obtained. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop several activities including attending project meetings nationally and abroad, communicating results to partners and stakeholders, and participating in the scientific development activities. This is a very active area of research and following projects are expected.
Background: Project NUTRITIVE includes 9 EU countries and aims to develop a decision support system to define the most efficient and sustainable manure management strategy for a given livestock farm in a given country. The project will formulate technical guidelines and recommendations that will support policy makers with enhanced knowledge to establish requirements for future European policies.
The Teagasc Pig Development Department (PDD) carries out research, knowledge transfer and education for the Irish Pig Sector. Proper manure management is key for sustainable farming and is one of the most important issues for pig farmers but also for dairy and poultry farmers. This project is of high priority for Irish farmers and for the wider society and aims to improve manure management reducing environmental impact of farming and ensuring sustainability of Irish farms.
Job Objectives
* Organise and carry out the works with the case farms within the project (farm visits, sampling, communications)
* Obtain and manage the data required by the partners
* Communications with the EU team
* Attend the project meetings in the different EU countries when required.
* To interpret research findings and communicate relevant information to farmers and colleagues.
* To disseminate research findings to a variety of audiences as appropriate
* Health & Safety Co-ordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety Duties as may be assigned from time to time.
* To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
* To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
* Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.
* Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time
Skills Requirement
Essential
* A Level 6 qualification, (as recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent), in animal science, agriculture or other relevant degrees.
* General knowledge of animal farming systems
* Work experience in animal farming or manure management
* Ability to work as part of a team, collaborating and building relationships with key stakeholders
* Displays initiative, is self-motivated and flexible
* Interested in self-development and acquiring new skills and knowledge
* Strives for high quality of work
* Ability to communicate effectively to enable knowledge and technology transfer
* Has the ability to problem solve and demonstrates a high level of attention to detail
* Demonstrates positive approach to new challenges

* Commitment to teamwork and collaborating with colleagues as per our Teagasc Together ethos.
Desirable
* A Level 7 qualification in animal science, agriculture or other relevant degrees would be a distinct advantage
Other
Candidates will ideally satisfy legal requirements to drive unaccompanied on Irish public roads
Eligibility
This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
