“Development of the AgNav digital platform to conduct environmental assessments of Pig farming systems”
Background
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool that can be used to quantify environmental impacts arising from material inputs and outputs over a product's entire life cycle. The recruited Walsh scholar will develop a hybrid bio economic/LCA model, incorporating the recently published Teagasc Pig Production Model (TPPM), that enables the estimation and benchmarking of the environmental impact of pig systems.
Using the model, the student will simulate current and future Irish pig systems, identifying the consequences of implementing environmental impact abatement measures individually or in combination, and estimating their economic consequences. A consultative process with relevant stakeholders will take place, where benchmarking will be presented, and future pig systems will be co-developed using a Delphi approach. This will allow identification of future pig systems that are optimised with regard to economic, environmental, and social pillars of sustainability. The successful candidate will join a diverse team engaged in research across multiple disciplines, such as life cycle assessment, software engineering, spatial analysis, and technology transfer. The candidate will also work closely with project collaborators, as well as engaging with advisory services and industry stakeholders.
Requirements
Applicants should hold or expect to hold a first or upper second-class honours degree in an appropriate discipline. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated and enthusiastic. The PhD Scholarship is a joint research project between Teagasc and the School of Biosystems & Food Engineering at University College Dublin. The position will be based at the Moorepark Research Centre near Fermoy, Co. Cork. The candidate will be reporting to Dr. Keelin O’Driscoll and will be registered into a four-year PhD degree programme in UCD, where they will work under the primary supervision of Dr. Fionnuala Murphy and co-supervision of Dr. Tom Curran. With the support of the Teagasc Pig and Poultry Development department, the graduate programme will enable the candidate to develop into an independent researcher at the highest international level. Applicants must be fluent in English (spoken and written). For applicants whose first language is not English, requirements are outlined here.
Award
The scholarship funding is €25,000 per annum as well as a contribution to university fees up to a maximum of €6,000 per year (total scholarship funding is €31,000), for a duration of four years.
