Optical Engineer with thin film coating experience
LirOptic Dublin 4, County Dublin, Ireland
LirOptic is pioneering the next generation of optical solutions with its innovative, solid state, shape-shifting lens technology. By integrating one or more LirOptic lenses into an optical system - whether in an objective (lens stack) or a Compact Camera Module (CCM) - we enable a suite of advanced functionalities, including:
* Auto Zoom & Auto Focus: adjustment with no mechanical movement.
* Artifact Elimination: dynamically correcting optical aberrations.
* Compact and Efficient Design: using less lenses to minimize stack size and weight.
* Simplified Optical Design Process: Gain an additional degree of freedom in design, enabling reuse of a lens stack design across multiple products and product generations.
LirOptic’s technology leverages the principle of localized thermal expansion to achieve precise and controlled shapeshifting of a lens surfaces. How:
* Surface Engineering: Electrical contacts of varying thickness are strategically placed on the surface of a substrate (various glasses and plastics).
* Voltage-Induced Shaping: Applying a voltage generates localized heating, leading to thermal expansion and resulting in precise shape changes of the substrate surface.
* Intellectual Property and Core Competence: LirOptic’s core expertise lies in the design of these contacts (shape and thickness), precise control of localized heating, and the accurate manipulation of the resulting lens shapes to meet a predicted mathematical formula.
This unique approach allows the lens shape to be varied predictably and precisely by adjusting the voltage applied to the contacts.
Skills required:
* Third level primary degree, preferably in Mechanical/Optical Engineering or Materials/Polymer Science. A master’s or PhD in these areas would be a distinct advantage. Other relevant qualifications will also be considered.
* Circa 5 Years experience in an R&D role in the optical industry or similar.
* Aptitude for analytical problem-solving and the ability to apply creative thinking to solve complex problems.
* Hands-on approach to innovative concept design, & development of novel products and fabrication processes.
* Good working knowledge of engineering design principles coupled with knowledge of polymer/plastics/crystalline material properties and thin film coating processes is particularly desirable.
* Strong initiative and follow-through in executing project responsibilities, overcoming obstacles, and balancing multiple priorities effectively through strong technical and/or project leadership skills.
* Excellent problem solving, decision making, and root cause analysis skills are required.
* The ability to effectively communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to all levels of the organisation.
This is an opportunity to join an ambitious startup that has spun out of UCD Physics, reporting directly to the CTO and CEO. Offering the potential to join the journey at ground level as we bring our technology to the world.
