Role Purpose
An Electrical Commissioning Engineer plays a crucial role in ensuring that the complex electrical infrastructure of the facility is installed, tested, and commissioned to meet the highest performance and reliability standards. This role is vital for Data Centre operations, where power reliability and system redundancy are critical to maintaining uptime and operational efficiency.
Electrical Commissioning Engineer Responsibilities:
In conjunction with your team, you will coordinate on the delivery of key systems within a facility including but not limited to the following:
* Conduct testing and commissioning of all electrical systems in the data centre, including power distribution units (PDUs), uninterrupted power supplies (UPS), switchgear, transformers, and backup generators.
* Develop and implement commissioning plans, procedures, and scripts for critical power systems, ensuring systems operate at peak efficiency and redundancy is maintained.
* Perform functional tests, load bank testing, and simulate failure scenarios to validate the reliability of the power systems under various operational conditions.
* Verify the proper integration and coordination of electrical systems with other building systems, such as cooling and fire protection.
* Ensure high-availability systems (such as UPS, generators, and battery storage systems) meet data centre requirements for fault tolerance and power redundancy (Tier standards: Tier I–IV).
* Test emergency power systems to ensure they can handle automatic failover without service interruption.
* Commission energy efficiency systems (e.g., smart power meters) to monitor real-time energy consumption and optimize power usage.
Managing the projects:
* To liaise with the project manager & prepare the project close out report.
Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality
* Ensure that the Health & Safety, Environmental & Quality procedures are followed & adequate records maintained.
* Work with the project team to develop the project specific quality plan.
* Ensure that personally held test equipment is maintained in good working order and within calibration and to apply for re-calibration within appropriate time scales.
* Maintain due regard to safety for all commissioning related site activities whilst recognizing and applying company specific safety rules.
* Comply with any Client required SHEQ procedures and processes.
* Ensure that all commissioning activities comply with Data Centre industry standards (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier Standards) and local regulations (e.g., IEC, NEC, IEEE standards).
* Conduct thorough safety assessments, risk analyses, and implement safety protocols during the commissioning process.
* Verify that electrical installations adhere to all relevant safety standards, particularly regarding power distribution, grounding, and electrical isolation.
Managing the Client and other external relationships
* Develop a strong & maintain an excellent working relationship from the start to the completion of the project.
* To act as an ambassador with any stakeholders involved with the project.
* Deliver what has been promised to the client on time, safely & to the highest quality.
Testing & Commissioning
* Develop a project specific commissioning plan, amending as required following input from the Client and / or System Operator.
* Attend Commissioning Meetings as required.
* Hold all the relevant authorisations appropriate to the testing activities to be undertaken.
* Take the role of Lead Commissioning Engineer on designated projects, coordinating and managing commissioning activities, whilst acting as a focal point for the customer.
* Prepare and collate commissioning documentation to be incorporated into final project folders.
* Fulfil Commissioning duties within competency e.g. production of commissioning programmes, commissioning method statements, inspection schedules etc. within specified time scales.
* To undertake testing and final commissioning on a wide range of plant and equipment at various voltage levels including fault investigation, diagnostic activities and rectification of faults within your competence.
* To undertake commissioning activities to customer specification on the range of plant and equipment within your competence including completion of appropriate test documentation.
Day-to-Day Control
* Provide technical support and direction, within your competence, to Kirby Project Team members, including the application of technical standards.
* To liaise and work with Design Engineers to resolve design related queries.
* To undertake other activities which the Company may reasonably require to be undertaken on a temporary basis which are within an individual’s area of competence.
* To report progress and/or problems to the Site Manager or Project Manager/Engineer responsible for project delivery.
* Provide reports to the project designer on design errors, omissions or short-comings so they can be addressed in future designs and to minimise the likelihood of reoccurrence.
Necessary requirement of the Electrical Commissioning Engineer
* 3rd level qualification in Electrical Engineering / Building Services Engineering.
* Ideally the Commissioning Engineer will possess 5+ years relevant experience in a similar role.
* Deep understanding of electrical systems, power distribution, low voltage and emergency power systems.
* Familiarity with Data Centre specific infrastructure such as UPS systems, generators, electrical switchgear, and power redundancy designs.
* Excellent communicator/strong interpersonal skills/communicates with impact.
* Excellent record keeper and administration skills.
