Digital Forensic Examiner
Job Type: Contract – 12+ months extendable
Location: Dublin – Hybrid
The Role
Digital Forensic Examiner will have the opportunity to gain experience in:
* Delivering a first-class national digital forensic service that is acknowledged as being on a par or exceeding those which are internationally recognised as providing best practice;
* Providing a competent and timely response to cybercrime incidents, whether these emanate domestically or internationally;
* Providing effective support services tasked with carrying out complex investigations which involve some degree of cyber dependency.
* Providing supports for the local investigation of cybercrime incidents nationally;
* Developing partnerships with Strategic stakeholders in the area of cybercrime.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
The successful candidates will be assigned to Digital Forensic Examinations. The following is a general overview of the duties involved:
* Forensically retrieve computer based evidence from digital media recovered in relation to matters under investigation teams operating at local level, nationwide across the full spectrum of criminal offending ranging from the most serious of criminal offences such as homicide and sexual offending to more high volume criminality such as economic crime offences.
* The examination of media from cases involving sexual crimes including the possession and distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material (C.S.A.M.) and other offensive image/movie or text files.
* Assist in the preparation of investigation files for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
* Represent in Court proceedings initiated by the Director of Public Prosecutions and be in a position to give evidence.
* Supplement the skills of the expert staff attached to ensure the highest level of professional standards are ever-present within this Bureau, and that the levels of service provided to all stakeholders is comparable with or exceeds those which are recognised as best practice internationally.
* Participate in and successfully complete all training and accreditation programmes that are required to perform their duties as a Digital Forensic Examiner, including an induction training program upon placement.
* Support of national and international operations in relation to cybercrime and deliver cybercrime threat assessments and awareness.
* Have the capacity to assist in investigations into large scale cybercrime, e.g. Malware, Ransomware, Denial of Service Attacks, Hacking, Phishing, Intrusions, Identity Theft, Internet Related Fraud, Attacks on Critical Infrastructure and Information Systems.
* Carry out research and development in relation to new tools and techniques as well as developing open source intelligence techniques and capabilities to include analysis and processing of data.
* Assist in the development and ongoing maintenance of a cybercrime intelligence capacity and associated information database which will action and support, and units nationwide.
* Keep abreast of developments in computer technology, legislation relating to cybercrime and best police practices in the area of computer forensics and cybercrime investigation;
* Liaise with outside agencies and corporate organisations as required.
* To observe and adhere to the principles as set out in the Code of Ethics and to uphold and promote this Code at every level.
* Comply with Health and Safety Legislation including strict adherence to mandatory Welfare supports. This includes two mandatory Welfare support sessions per year.
Training
The field of digital forensics is rapidly evolving and those involved in the area are continually developing their skills in emerging and new technologies. Training is provided to support people in carrying out the role and there is the opportunity to develop a unique and important skillset.
This role involves the digital forensic examination of a range of material seized in the course of criminal investigations. The material can be varied in nature but as it relates to criminal activity, some of the material can be challenging and can involve difficult and sensitive situations. In particular, it is important to be aware of deals with media from cases involving sexual crime and C.S.A.M. Therefore, resilience is critical in performing this unique job and there are a wide range of welfare supports available such as peer supports and access to the Employee Assistance Service.
Entry Requirements
Essential:
Route 1:
* (a) A relevant 3rd level degree in the field of Forensic Computing or Cyber Crime Investigations or related discipline;
and
* (b) A minimum of 2 years’ experience in one or more of the following areas: Computer forensics, programming, networking, Windows and mobile devices Operating Systems, and other Operating Systems such as OS X and Linux.
OR
Route 2:
* (a) At least two industry recognised certifications in Digital Forensics tools such as X-ways, Axiom or industry recognised certifications in Cyber Security such as CISCO, SANS etc;
and
* (b) At least three years’ practical/hands-on experience directly relevant to the role.
1. The ability to disassemble computers and handle mobile devices for forensic examination purposes, whilst maintaining accurate contemporaneous records. Identification, removal and safe handling of key computer and/or mobile device components;
2. Demonstrate high levels of attention to detail during the course of work;
3. Some experience/knowledge of the ISO 17025 standard and ACPO Good Practice for Digital Evidence;
4. The ability to carry out duties in a discreet, tactful and professional manner;
5. Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship management skills with the ability to fully engage with a range of stakeholders;
6. The ability to present evidence of a technical nature in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing;
7. The ability to work on their own initiative, to work independently and in a team environment;
8. The ability to prioritise, organise and manage a multi-layered file load in a busy environment;
9. The ability to take responsibility for meeting defined performance targets with clear accountability for outcomes;
10. The ability to analyse risk and to take corrective action;
11. Resilience to face difficult circumstances, be prepared to make difficult decisions and have the confidence to see them through.
Desirable
* Experience in presenting complete data analysis to a range of audiences.
* Full Class B driving license without endorsements.
Candidates should hold appropriate RTWs for Ireland i.e. Stamp 4, Irish/British/EU passport.
