Overview of role:
The Clinical Nurse Manager 2 of the Endoscopy unit is responsible for the co-ordination and management of activity and resources within the Endoscopy unit ensuring the provision of safe, quality assured, efficient service for patients and colleagues. To work as a member of a team of nurses in UPMC Whitfield Hospital Endoscopy Unit providing high quality, patient centred care for patients and their families. To develop and maintain good relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and to work closely with nursing colleagues developing innovative practice within the unit delivering evidence-based care. To develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice relating to Endoscopy.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
General:
* Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence based, care planning approach.
* Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
* Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by NMBI.
* Participate in teams / meetings / committees as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members.
* Facilitate co-ordination, co-operation, and liaison across healthcare teams.
* Plan and organise schedules within Endoscopy, in conjunction with the ADON.
* Supervise the day-to-day activities of the endoscopy team.
* Lead in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based policies, guidelines, and procedures for the unit.
* Lead in the accreditation process. Identify continuous quality improvements and develop quality programmes in consultation with the multi-disciplinary team.
* Keep abreast of research and developments in nursing, update own knowledge, experience, and skills by continuous professional development.
* To foster good working relationships between colleagues and other staff by maintaining high professional standards.
* Work within allocated resources through rigorous planning, monitoring and evaluation of all available resources.
* To work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Manage communication at departmental level and facilitate team building.
* Provide staff leadership and motivation which is conducive to good working relations and work performance.
* Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
* Take responsibility for all equipment such as endoscopy monitors, Dynamaps, suction apparatus, diathermy machines, light source and photographic printer.
* Ensure the updating of the Endoscopy register and ensure the Endoscopy list is checked with PIMS and the correct patient details are also on Endobase System.
* To monitor safe and economic use of all supplies, considering at all times the budgetary implications of implementing care and treatments.
* Be familiar with stock management at unit level and how to access/order stock whilst always maintaining adequate stock levels to meet daily requirements.
* Ensure the patient is attached to the monitoring equipment and oxygen and placed in the correct position.
* To assist the Anaesthetist and consultant with drug preparation and any checks necessary.
* To adhere to the “time out” policy.
* To assist with biopsies, thus ensuring patients stays in the correct position and observing airway and vital signs.
* Check biopsy specimens and laboratory forms with another nurse ensuring the correct patient details are filled.
* Ensure that when a procedure is completed, that all the relevant documentation is completed by the consultant, anaesthetist, and nurses.
* To follow the policy re processing and cleaning of scopes.
* To ensure that all Specimens are brought to the lab and checked with laboratory staff.
* To ensure that there is an accurate recording of start and finish times for each procedure, including the name of the Anaesthetist, if applicable.
* Ensure the Medication Management Policy is adhered to by all staff.
* To ensure that any necessary learning opportunities or incidences are reported in a timely manner on the hospital reporting system, Viclarity.
* To ensure that the staff development and induction programme for trained and untrained staff including students is in place for the clinical area.
* Identify opportunities for staff professional development in keeping with the requirements of the service.
Managerial:
* Provide the necessary supervision, co-ordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure the optimum delivery of care in the designated area through allocating work fairly and competently.
* Manage communication at ward and departmental level and facilitate team building.
* Provide staff leadership and motivation which is conducive to good working relations and work performance.
* Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
* Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
* Lead and implement change.
* Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures. Monitor as appropriate and lead on proactive improvement.
* Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
* Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure by supporting the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing and deputising in his / her absence when required to do so.
* Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
* Carry out the Engagement and Competency Process with all department Staff.
* Be familiar with National Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Quality Improvement (NEQI) Programme.
Professional Accountability and Development:
* Ensure you remain professionally updated and ensure care in all areas is delivered in line with the latest research to promote evidence-based practice. Actively participate in research where appropriate for the benefit of patients.
* Provide a supportive and learning environment in the Hospital, which enables the educational and professional development needs of staff to be met.
* Ensure that statutory rules, guidelines, and legislation are understood and complied with.
* Ensure that standards of care are safeguarded, and all staff are aware of the need for patients and clients. High quality care is recognised as of primary importance.
* Act as a positive role model with regards to the Hospital ethos.
* Attend all mandatory and desirable training.
* Ensure to attend any relevant conferences etc, that relate to endoscopy.
Quality & Audit:
* Participate and lead as required in clinical audit and research activity within the field, promoting a positive attitude towards the implementation of evidence-based practice.
* Undertake research/ clinical audit as necessary, critically analyse and provide written reports of the same.
* Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
* Work closely with the Quality and Patient Safety team, ensuring the department is meeting accreditation standards at all times.
* Participate in NEQI’s Programme.
Health and Safety:
* To uphold UPMC’s policy requirements in relation to Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety and Health and Safety at work regulations and to attend updates.
* Identify potential risks for all staff, patients and visitors and adhere to relevant incident reporting procedures.
* To observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management associated with this post.
Qualifications & Experience:
* Be a registered general nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
* Must have at least 2 years’ experience in a management role within a busy endoscopy service.
* Previous experience within a private healthcare setting would be advantageous.
* Previous experience with JAG accreditation would be desirable.
* Demonstrate leadership skills and ability to influence others.
* Demonstrate knowledge and experience of quality audit/assurance systems.
* Have experience in change management.
* Possess excellent communication skills.
* Evidence of participation in an accreditation process would be desirable.
