Principal Applied Scientist, CloudWatch
The AWS Utility Computing (UC) organization provides product innovations, from foundational services such as Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that set AWS's services and features apart in the industry.
You will support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.
Job Description
CloudWatch is the observability platform of AWS, built for developers, system operators, site reliability engineers (SRE), and IT managers. It collects monitoring and operational data in the form of logs, metrics, and events, providing a unified view of AWS resources, applications, and services that run on AWS, and on-premises servers.
Customers use CloudWatch to set high-resolution alarms, visualize logs and metrics side by side, take automated actions, troubleshoot issues, and discover insights to optimize their applications and ensure they are running smoothly.
Responsibilities
* Take on challenging and ambiguous customer problems, distill customer requirements, and deliver solutions that leverage existing academic research or utilize out-of-the-box thinking.
* Research and develop novel approaches for anomaly detection, root cause analysis, and provide intelligent insights from vast amounts of monitoring and observability data.
* Collaborate with scientists and engineers across the CloudWatch team and directly with customers.
* Hire, develop, grow, and mentor junior scientists.
Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* Ph.D. degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Math, or a related field.
* Hands-on experience in solving difficult machine learning problems.
* Expertise in more than one major programming language (C++, Java, etc.) and at least one scripting language (Perl, Python, etc.).
* Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical lead.
* Excellent writing skills for presenting business cases and scientific models with rigorous analyses.
* Strong fundamentals in problem-solving, algorithm design, and complexity analysis.
* Proven track record in leading, mentoring, and growing teams of scientists.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Deep technical knowledge of machine learning and statistical methodologies.
* Experience with deep learning toolkits and frameworks.
* Solid software development experience.
* Algorithm and model development experience for large-scale applications.
* Experience with defining research and development practices in an applied environment.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with technical and business people.
* Professional traits necessary for Amazon leaders, including excellent judgment, maintaining high standards, thinking strategically, and inspiring passion in others.
