Theatre Staff Nurse (full time)
Purpose of the Role
To work in collaboration with the Nursing team to ensure excellence in patient care through a well-educated and highly motivated team of carers and the effective and efficient use of resources. Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Practice within policies and procedures, legal requirements, guidelines and standards as directed by the Nursing Department and NMBI.
2. Be familiar with and practice within all policies, procedures and standards set out by the hospital. Provide effective and efficient nursing care by planning, implementing and evaluating care given to patients from admission to discharge and completing nursing assessment care plan and other relevant documentation.
3. Report verbally and in writing, pertinent patient care information to appropriate nursing/medical staff and other clinical staff. Ensure all handover, reports and escalations are carried out using approved ISBAR handover tool.
4. Liaise with and co-operate with other departments as required and demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
5. Ensure all documentation relating to patient is accurately maintained in the patient’s medical records in line with policy and procedures and the record kept in a confidential manner and using only approved abbreviations.
6. Comply with the medications policy ensuring that regulations for the safekeeping and recording of scheduling drugs are adhered to at all times.
7. Carry out IV Cannulation of patients according to hospital policy.
8. Display a professional, courteous & caring liaison with patient and their relatives, staff and all other service users in line with the Bon Secours values.
9. Function effectively and respond quickly and calmly in an emergency situation.
10. Provide care with minimal supervision and take charge of the department in the absence of the CNM II.
11. Use discretion and decision making regarding patient care, referring appropriately to CNM II, Medical Staff or other disciplines.
12. Follow appropriate lines of authority by discussing issues first with CNM II.
13. Take responsibility for stock control, ensuring adequate levels of required supplies are held on the department at all times.
14. Mentor student nurses, new staff nurses and care assistants.
15. Contribute to Nursing ‘Best Practice’ by assisting in identifying recurrent nursing problems and implementing evidence-based practices.
16. Participate and co-operate with initiatives to maintain Hospital accreditation, including assisting with data collection.
17. Deputise for the CNMs, as requested and plan/delegate staff workload in accordance with the needs of the Department.
18. Ensure all adverse occurrences and/or difficulties concerning patients and staff are reported to CNM/Director of Nursing, documenting full details as per Hospital Policy.
19. Participate in Hospital’s Performance Review and Development System/Process.
20. Monitor, report and, in association with the CNM II, take appropriate corrective action on matters which may not be in keeping with acceptable standards, may inhibit the efficient operation or damage the reputation of the Hospital.
21. Maintain own education records and participate in ongoing professional development/education.
22. Ensure effective and efficient use of resources at all times.
23. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as required by the Clinical Nurse Manager.
Person Specification
1. Be a Registered General Nurse.
2. Have completed a relevant Theatre Nursing course.
3. Have at least one year of Theatre experience.
4. Have experience of working in a multi-disciplinary clinical environment.
5. IT Skills are desirable.
6. A current Basic Life Support certification is mandatory for all Nurses.
7. Current Advanced Life Support Certification, if applicable to area of work.
