The purpose of this post is to participate in a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of the patients in cooperation with the Consultant Chemical Pathologist, Laboratory Manger, Chief Medical Scientist, Senior Medical Scientist and Staff Grade Medical Scientists. This post within the Biochemistry Department will report to the Senior and Chief Medical Scientist, Laboratory Manager and Consultant Chemical Pathologist
The successful candidate will:
Participate in a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of the patients
Participate in the operational processes to the standards of 'best practice', in order to optimise use of resources
Participate in the 'quality management' programme which is patient centred and which measures and audits performance and client satisfaction
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
General
1. Maintain throughout the hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities and in adherence with hospital policies
2. Participate in implementing a clinical laboratory service that is safe, efficient and supports the clinical needs of our patients
3. Participate in training staff as required
4. Participate in the implementation of operational processes to the standards of 'best practice', in order to optimise use of resources
5. Participate in the implementation of a 'quality management' programme which is patient centred and which measures and audits performance and client satisfaction
6. Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position
7. Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the hospital
8. Comply with relevant procedures, methods and quality standards/policies as per the Quality Manual

Specific
9. Perform routine work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the relevant Llaboratory Management Team
10. Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with laboratory and hospital policy
11. Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information
12. Participation is encouraged in out-of-hours laboratory emergency work according to hospital policy.
13. In co-operation with the Consultant Head of Department, Chief Medical Scientist and other designated senior staff, participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital policy
14. Ensuring that the laboratory operates within a quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO 15189 Medical laboratories -Requirements for quality and competence and ISO 22870 Point of care testing (POCT)- Requirements for quality and competence
15. To perform routine inspections / maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure that all equipment is properly maintained and kept in serviceable condition.
16. Participate as required in the registration and stock level of laboratory reagents and materials
17. Receive and record details of mishaps, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate the circumstances with appropriate team members and take the necessary action and report findings as required, and as determined by the Chief Medical Scientist
18. Ensure the policy in relation to laboratory record keeping is followed
19. Co-operate in evaluating new equipment and consumable items
20. Participate and assist in carrying out the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents and multiple trauma according to the Laboratory Management Team policy
21. Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant Head of Department, Chief Medical Scientist and designated senior staff, appropriate compliance with the International and National Guidelines and standards of provision of Laboratory Services and actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance
22. Participate in the provision of appropriate statistical and management information
23. Participate in the management and running of the computer-integrated laboratory system
24. Make the most effective and efficient use of development in information technology for both patient care and administrative support in a manner, which integrates well with systems throughout the organisation.
25. To represent the Biochemistry department at meetings when required.
26. To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up to date knowledge.
Eligibility Criteria
1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc
(a) Candidates for appointment must:
(i) Be registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU. See https://coru.ie/aboutus/registration-boards/medical-scientists-registration-board/apply-forregistration/ OR
(ii) Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005, must submit proof of application for registration with the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU. The acceptable proof is correspondence from the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU confirming their application for registration as a Section 91 applicant was received by the 30th March 2021. AND
(iii) (b) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.
2. Annual registration
(i) On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU And
(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC)
