On behalf of our client, one of Ireland’s leading Building Contractors with operations throughout Ireland and the UK, we are currently recruiting for a Senior Engineer in the Cork region. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a prestigious main contractor and work with like-minded people on award-winning multi-million-euro projects.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Review the design in detail for buildability and generate a schedule of issues for each stage of construction. Maintain this list and update during construction, reviewing regularly with the Client Project Manager on site.
2. Ensure, by agreement with the project manager, that the project has the required engineering and technical resource to fulfil all engineering duties. Provide necessary leadership to any engineering staff reporting directly to you. Understand any mentoring and training requirements.
3. Liaise with the design team to ensure the construction team has all the required information to construct the Works. Generate and maintain the RFI (Request for Information) Schedule in line with the programme requirements. Hold responsible people to account for providing required design information and responding. Provide clear reporting to the project management team to enable them to understand design status and impact if any to project.
4. Be fully aware of the Programme of the project (Design, Procurement, Lead-in and Construction).
5. In addition to the programme requirements, challenge the design to provide commercial benefit where possible.
6. Take responsibility for dimensional control from ensuring the project has the required primary control information to the site engineering team providing any required setting out for the Works. Ensure robust checking system is in place to continually monitor and provide required assurance on setting out.
7. Submit all technical submissions delegated to you from the PM within the scope of works you have responsibility for within the required timescales including taking note of required approval/response periods so that there is no impact to the programme.
8. Generate an Inspection and Test Plan Schedule in line with the Works Information that provides the necessary inspections and hold points during construction.
9. Generate and/or review method statements and risk assessments in conjunction with the wider team timely, ensuring buildability and safe systems of works are always prioritised.
10. Carry out necessary inspections and audits of Works or delegate to suitable team members to ensure that all required inspections are being carried out.
11. Agree the extent of your responsibility in each package of works. When the relevant packages are being tendered, advise on the required scope of works to be included within each package (if packages are not already let) including all required attendances. Sign off on subcontract packages and ensure they conform with the specification, drawings and all other contract documents before the sub contracts are let.
12. In conjunction with the site management, ensure all contractors adopt a safe system of works. Review all method statements for which you have responsibility prior to the works commencing. Take specific care in the high-risk works involved.
13. Take responsibility for coordination of all temporary works within your scope of works and maintain a temporary works register on site.
14. Participate in weekly services engineering meetings or as required to provide constant updates to the project management team on engineering function e.g. resources, risks, design and buildability issues. Ensure all relevant persons are in attendance.
15. Understand the individual package values for which you have engineering responsibility and report on individual events that may have an impact on these values. Ensure all events that may have a commercial and/or time impact are clearly reported to the project manager or lead for the services area you are responsible for. Maintain detailed diaries with relevant information as agreed with the site management. Ensure site engineers maintain detailed diaries/records too.
16. Ensure the design is coordinated to allow for all building services as coordinated. Where there is a problem ensure this is immediately flagged to the project manager or design coordinator. Attend weekly design meetings as required. Ensure BIM usage is endorsed and being employed to maximise gains from builders’ work point of view etc.
17. Understand and employ the project/company quality system to ensure the required quality assurance is being adopted for all trades and for ensuring that all trade’s inspection and test plans are in place and are being fully adhered to. You are responsible for requesting any training that may be required to ensure that this is fully complied with.
18. Ensure all contractors comply with the required quality control on site. A system must be employed whereby the contractor must offer their works for inspection to the client to a pre-agreed plan. All actions from each inspection must be closed out (or to a standard agreed by the project manager) before the senior engineer provides approval for the next stage of works to proceed. This must all be done in line with the project manager and other team members as it needs to be integrated fully with the required sequence of works.
19. Ensure all site engineers request and receive timely information so that there is no impact to the programme.
20. As the works progress generate an NCR (nonconformance report) register and maintain during construction. Hold responsible persons and contractors to account and provide detailed weekly reports to the project management team and commercial team on progress/noncompliance.
21. Prior to completion agree snagging process with the project manager. Take responsibility for snagging programme as tasked by the PM. Hold subcontractors to account, close out all snags by timely so as not to affect handover.
22. Provide a schedule of lessons learnt to the Contracts/Project Manager at the end of the project and at relevant times during its execution. Build this schedule as the works proceed.
23. Provide assistance to close out all subcontractor accounts with which you have involvement.
24. Advise engineers on setting out methods and techniques with the responsibility to develop them to their maximum potential.
25. Take responsibility for selection and requisition of materials and plant for the use during the construction works ensuring purchasing department procedures are always adhered to.
26. Carry out all work in accordance with health and safety and any other legal requirements.
27. Ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures.
28. Manage the performance of all employees assigned to you in accordance with legislation and company procedures.
29. Attend and engage fully in any learning and development activities that are deemed appropriate by your line management.
30. Participate and engage fully in company appraisal/performance review processes and constantly work to improve your individual, your team and the wider group’s performance.
Requirements:
1. Relevant Engineering Degree
2. Must have an ability to work within a dynamic team of professionals
3. Must have an ability to perform multiple tasks at a high level of quality
4. Must have an ability to work well within a deadline environment
5. Minimum of 8 years’ experience with a Main Contractor in Ireland or the UK.
6. Motivated individual that likes to work in a fast-moving environment
