Job Overview
The Acute Surgical Assessment Units (ASAU) are designed to provide significant efficiency and safety benefits to acutely ill surgical patients. The ASAU is part of the Acute Floor, which also includes an Emergency Department (ED), Resuscitation Unit, Acute Medical Unit, and an age-related assessment unit. ASAUs handle a significant throughput of acutely unwell surgical patients who do not require active resuscitation. Patients categorized as Category 1s and 2 (according to the Manchester Triage System) will continue through the ED/resuscitation streams. The primary aim of an ASAU, as outlined in the Minimum Standards for Acute Surgical Assessment Units in Ireland (NCPS, 2023), is to deliver Senior Decision Making early in the pathway of selected acute surgical patients. Treatment may be provided on the spot, through ambulatory or outpatient care, or may require admission.
The role of the ASAU Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2) is to manage the department and support patients, relatives, and staff through the provision of clinical, managerial, and educational excellence. The CNM2 will play a pivotal role in the coordination and management of activities and resources associated with the ASAU. They will work in partnership with all staff members, including the Directorate Nurse Manager, CNM3, Director of Nursing, Site Nurse Managers (SNM), Clinical Director/Specialty Consultants, and inter/trans-disciplinary teams to maintain, develop, and improve patient-centered, quality, safe care.
