Details of Service
Cork University Hospital (CUH) has approximately 800 beds and is the primary teaching hospital for the Faculty of Health and Science in University College Cork (UCC). CUH is one of only two Major Trauma Centres in the Republic of Ireland, providing a wide range of specialties including Paediatrics, Oncology, and Haematology.
Paediatric Haematology Oncology Service in CUH
The Safari Unit in CUH provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care to paediatric haematology/oncology patients, including Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT). The CNS role is central to facilitate trust and confidence during the child’s treatment journey, address patient expectations, and promote wellness.
The CNS will meet the psychological, emotional, clinical nursing, and informational needs of patients and their families, coordinating care with other healthcare agencies.
Purpose of the Post
The cCNS pathway will support the post holder to develop the skills and knowledge required for the CNS role, delivering care in line with the five core concepts of the role as outlined in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist Posts.
Caseload
The cCNS will focus on paediatric patients aged 0–16 years.
The cCNS clinical role is based on the core concepts and associated competencies for the CNS, including:
1. Clinical Focus (Direct and Indirect Care)
2. Education and Training
3. Audit and Research
4. Consultancy (including leadership in clinical practice)
